Now that I am "approved" for surgery and this is becoming a reality, I figured NOW is the time to post my story so far.

I am 49, 5'7 and 235 at my highest weight. (Can't believe I actually wrote that down for public consumption!) That made me a BMI of 36.8.

I had considered weight loss surgery off and on throughout the years of yo-yo dieting. My last good weight loss was about 30 pounds back in 2009 and I was lighter then. So that means I have put on about 40 pounds in four years. (Less than a pound a month, not too bad, right??!! Ha!)

I have some lung problems, high blood pressure (if you would only lose weight, you wouldn't have to take these pills anymore....) and hypothyroidism. Too much for someone my age I decided and started considering the lap-band. I am a nurse and considered that to be "least invasive" and "easiest" to have done surgically.

On November 28, 2012, I signed the hubby and I up for an informational seminar. While hubby wasn't interested (I'm hoping to change that), I listened to the doctor present the band, sleeve and RNY options. To his credit, he didn't try to sway anyone to any one procedure, but I had changed my thinking from lap-band to sleeve. I submitted my "insurance verification" form and left.

In lateDecember/early January, I was contacted by the doctor's office and told that my insurance (CIGNA) did provide WLS benefits. I had started a post-holiday "kind of" diet about mid-January with Weight Watchers. I saw my surgeon for the first time on January 28, 2013. We discussed all the usual things and agreed that the sleeve was a good procedure for me.

My only beef with the process was that the coordinator told me "All your insurance needs is the evaluation and 3 months of diet history. Just print out Weight Watchers and it will be ok." More on that in a minute....

From there, I had:

EGD (endoscopy) on 2-4 and found to have a small hiatal hernia.

Psych eval and nutrition eval on 2-13.

In the mean time, I had researched CIGNA's bariatric policy and found out that I needed a lot more than "Just 3 months of Weight Watcher history." Rather than chance it, I went and got clearance from my PMD and met with a nutritionist for 3 months of a supervised diet. (2-20, 3-16 and 4-20...boy am I glad I started that "kind of diet" back in January!) Am now at 222 (fluctuating pounds.)

My coordinator submitted my packet on about May 10th with a comment of "everything looks great...should be no problem."

On May 17th, I was notified of denial...based on two points. My physician had failed to state that he BOTH recommended me for the surgery AND cleared me (he only recommended me....despite the fact I had asked him to do both.) The nutritionist did a summary report that detailed all three visits, with all of the components required, but CIGNA wanted it in three separate notes. At least it wasnt because of medical criteria!

So...my coordinator got all that together and on May 21st, she submitted again, stating it could take up to 90 days, but probably not that long. The waiting is the hardest part!!!

Well, today I got the news I was waiting for...APPROVED! It took 7 business days for the appeal.

Now we are in fast-forward mode:

6-10: Pre-op meeting with surgeon to sign consents, etc...

6-15: Start of pre-op diet! (Not looking forward to it....)

6-17: Pre-op lab/x-ray work at hospital

6-25: Surgery

I travel for my work (I am a healthcare consultant) and will be out of town three weeks between now and then, so it will fly by! I am so excited. I think now that it's a reality, my husband is concerned. I got the "If it makes you happy, it makes me happy" but I am not convinced. I know he is supportive of my decisions, but probably a bit insecure at the same time. food has always been a big part of our life and I have been slowly withdrawing from that over the last few months.

Thanks for listening! I am so darn excited I just needed to share it with someone. I have told very few people.

I will update after the surgery.

Well surgery went as planned, but that's where the fun started. First my white cell count went sky high (25k) and no one could figure out why. Then my red cell count (hemoglobin) started to go down (7.6) at the lowest. Threats of blood transfusions lingered, but I asked for repeat lab draws and fortunately it was above 8, which is the magical number for a blood transfusion.

It got me an extra night in the hospital, so 3 nights rather than 2, but excellent nursing care and my surgeon called me from his vacation to check in.

So happy to be home and sleeping in my own bed. Slept most all of yesterday and last night once I got home. Feel decidedly better today, but still weak.

Protein drinks and liquids are going down fairly well, just some minor pain. I am still struggling mentally that this is actually done and I cant eat whatever I want anymore, but am happy with the scale results (down to 209.)

Here I am at one month today. I have only lost 15 pounds since surgery, but I have lost inches! 3.5 off my hips, which is wonderful. I started out wearing a size 22 and the other day I purchased some size 16 pants! My face looks thinner.

I can only eat about 1/4 cup of soft food still. Some days are better than others with my Protein and liquids, but most days I hit my goals. I still struggle with the fact that I cant eat a big fat meal ever again, but by the same token, I have yet to be hungry and I dont physically miss the food. There are some cravings, like pizza, hot dogs and hamburgers, but I will just make "mock ups" of those to satisfy the craving and move on.

Had a rough patch at the two week mark with some fatigue and weakness, but that seems to have passed ok.

The hubby asked me the other day if I had any regrets. I said NO! I am good, and even though the weight loss has been slow, I know it will continue to come off.

I am already off my blood pressure meds, and that is one of the reasons why I did this!

Congrats to you! Your coordinator/insurance issues sound very similar to mine... I was told the same thing about my time w/WW counting for my supervised diet time....now I wait for my additional appointments and probably six months but it gives me time to keep learning and absorbing info now....keep up the good work!

I was on them for years. I took my last one the night before surgery. I was really surprised that in the hospital I didnt need them and I havent needed them since! I spoke with a doctor friend of mine about why the change so quickly and she said once you stop eating "bad" food, the body responds very quickly.

Thanks for telling us your timeline. I've been wondering how it flows. I saw my family dr and a nutritionist August 1. I have two more nutritionist visits, and a psych eval to go. I'm 5'9 and weigh 247. I have no co-morbidity except possibly sleep apnea. I took the home test but haven't gotten results yet. I'm afraid to lose any weight because it might put my bmi too low. I have Cigna too.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
