I'm told carbonation is a no no after surgery, not just right after, but for the rest of forever!!! Has anyone found a way to cope or replace the fizzy? It's not that I crave "pop" or anything bad, just crave the bubbles!!!

I can't drink it AT ALL! The taste has changed. It tastes aweful. Aweful.

I will start by saying everyone is different when it comes to what their new stomachs can tolerate. I have never had any issues to date with any types of food. With that said the times I have indulged and had a coke I had zero issues drinking it and it taste the same to me.

I am 4 months out and had my first carbonated drink at 3 months... would not have tried one shortly after surgery.

If drinking a carbonated beverage will lead to you continuing the habit I would advise not drinking them. I can have one once and awhile and it really doesn't effect my diet and It really is once in a blue moon... probably have had 3 cokes since surgery.

I personally don't believe it when members states that you can never drink a carbonated beverage again... thats BS IMO.

I guess I'm mainly going by what my doc and the packet he gave me says. It says foods to avoid: carbonated beverages. I guess the gasses can stretch the sleeve (this is what my packet says), but I just don't see how it's that big of an issue. I don't have any form of vice with soda or sugary drinks but I enjoy a fizzy drink more than a flat one.

An example is, today I found a new glaceau drink (makers of Vitamin water) and its called fruit Water. Sparkling zero calorie water. It's delicious and has no added sugar, no calories, and says it has a few different Vitamins in it. This to me SOUNDS like a healthy alternative to pop, but does the carbonation make it unsafe?

My doc's packet says the same thing, but explains that if you repeatedly stretch your sleeve with fizzy carbonated drinks--you will lose the effectiveness of your sleeve. And why go thru the pain of surgery if you aren't going to use your sleeve to lose weight? I personally wouldn't bother with the surgery if I planned to look for ways to cheat because I'm only cheating myself out of a thinner me!

This is the one thing I won't do is go back to carbonated drinks. They were making me sick to my stomach even before my surgery. When you realize all the horrible stuff they put in them it's enough reason to stop them. The acid in coke can supposedly dissolve metal so you know it's not good for our new small stomachs.

Not looking to go back to coke or sugary drinks like I said. Here, club soda, plain club soda, I love the bubbles. It's more satisfying to me I can drink a few sips of that and feel more satisfied then if I drink a bottle of Gatorade or Vitamin Water. Not looking to "cheat" at all. Only trying to find truth behind some risks I'm reading on, without being judged.

I have friends that drink carbonated stuff with no problems. I don't because diet soda was a real problem for me.... I had a hard time giving it up. But that is just me... Remember this is your journey and you need to find what works for you. :)

I'm 2 years out and drink 2-3 bottles of sparkling Water per day. It did not and will not stretch my stomach. Excess bubbles are burped right out. Everyone is different but I enjoy it everyday!

Im five months out and have had a half dozen if that. No issues and tastes the same. Just keeping them in moderation. Used to drink three coke zeros a day before surgery.

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
