Successful weight loss using portion control ?

Recommended Posts

Hi all - just wondering if any of you have had great success loosing lots of weight while eating regular foods but on a Portion Control plan ... Say regular food but only 1000- 1200 calories a day ?

Yes, Proteins first, then veggies , then the carbs?

Regular food - maybe one day you are on the run so you have 4 chicken nuggets with maybe 4 fries ..., because that's all that fits in the sleeve .....

Your family goes out and you have steak, veggies and 2 bites of dessert ?

Any veterans eat like this and loose and keep it off ? Any newer people eat like this and loose ?

I have been doing this and have 33 pounds in 12 weeks. I am thinking I am not loosing as fast as others because I am not doing a strick Atkins

Plan ... Any feed back would be appreciated - unless it is just gonna be un - constructive criticism.

Thanks all you sleevers ????

Personally I do best with very low carb and high fat and 70-90 grams of Protein a day.. 800-1050 calories... and even doing it this way I'm not breaking any weight loss records.. but I'm happy with my results. There are many however who do just eat the same food they always have, just LESS of it and they do wonderfully... It's really just up to your body.. I have some hormonal/metabolic issues and MY body seems to respond best to the very low carb (under 20 net carbs a day)

Kapu, are you able to get all your Protein in? How many grams are you shooting for daily?

I have eaten a high Protein diet with veggies and maybe a bite or 2 of a carb. I am pretty much at goal (personal) and am maintaining. When I want to drop some weight, i do all protein. The carbs seem to make me retain weight so I don't eat them. :)

I am not on limited carbs. I am also 12 weeks and 33 pounds. My surgeon and NUT believe in balanced. I am happy with this. I do so much better just eating balanced. I of course eat Protein first, veggies then carbs. I feel normal and not like I am dieting. I get about 800 or so calories a day and I would say about 50 or so carbs, give or take. Aim for 70-80 grams of Protein per day. Most of my carbs come in the morning by way of a Protein shake. I make mine with about 1/2 a banana, a couple of frozen strawberries, 6 oz of skim milk and a scoop of protein. lunch and dinner are protein and either veggie or a portion of fruit. There is not room for other types of carbs.

While my diet is mostly low carb, its not strictly limited, there just is not room in my limited real estate tummy and I am loving this. I eat normal food now and make the best choices I can. Yesterday for our Memorial day BBQ I tried steak for the first time. It was sooooo good. Had about 1 and 1/2 oz of a wonderful filet and just took my time, chewed well and enjoyed it.

Thx kapu! My Nut was really insistent that I get off Protein Shakes and start eating"real food" immediately. I have found it very difficult to keep up with my Protein by following her instructions..I'm going back to one shake more a day even if they are pretty caloric..

I actually have been using Portion Control since I started the purée stage. I am eating a balanced diet. I do avoid bread, Pasta, soda, sugary drinks, alcohol, rice, and processed foods. I also do use a little sugar and honey, as I don't use any artificial sweeteners. I have been losing steadily which is fine for me. Pre- sleeve I was 250, post- op I am 225. I was sleeved on April 22, 2013. Very happy so far.

I don't really count carbs, but I do limit them at a high level, in that I avoid rice, bread, and Pasta for the most part. I primarily make sure I get at least 70 grams of Protein a day, keep my calories around 900-1100, and I don't graze. Other than that, if there is nothing special going on, I eat pretty much the same stuff all the time, like Protein Shake for Breakfast, greek yogurt, cheese, lean meats, some fruits and/or vegetable with lunch and dinner. If something is going on, I eat whatever everyone else is eating, whether it's pizza, burgers, mexican, etc. So far it's working for me. Even when I'm indulging on those special occasions, I count my calories. I've been known to go as high as 2000 on a holiday, which makes me nervous, but I probably only do that once a month. I firmly believe it's what we do over the course of time that makes the difference, and a rare day of getting up to 2000 calories is OK (it doesn't take much volume to add up with high calorie foods). I burn more than that just sitting around, so I'm still at a defecit. I had this surgery as opposed to RNY because I don't want my diet controlling my life, and so far, it's working.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
