Seeing a psychologist before or after sleeve for eating issues

Recommended Posts

Hey all. I have a question.

How many of you saw or are seeing a psychologist before the sleeve or after the sleeve for eating issues? I am definitely a stress eater and I've got it under control mostly while I'm still in the 6 month supervised diet but I'm worried about it still.

I've already decided I'll see the psychologist after the sleeve just to deal with the head issues but just wanted to see what everyone else is doing.

I am seeing a therapist monthly and I am over 5 months post-op. I have been seeing her since before surgery- she was referred to me by the psychologist at my surgeon's office. She specializes in WLS patients, pre-and post-op. It's a good idea to see one regularly if you feel you need it- it is a fairly good indicator of long-term success. I am not ashamed to say I need it. LOL I love having someone who is objective listen to me and ask me the right questions. I highly suggest it! My therapist is part of my success at this.

I've thought about it ... My NUT recommended because I have serious food issues LOL ... So I will do it after !! I don't want to fall back in to bad habits !!

I had a couple of session pre-op that I thought were really helpful. I've been in recovery for about 25 years, so I really know the usefulness of having someone to talk to about issues. It is awesome that you realize that you need to do is and are taking the right steps. Too many people do not do this and end up not understanding why their WLS has failed them.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
