My nutritionist and surgeon kept telling me to just eat wisely - low fat, low carbs. I didn't have to be on a liquid or special diet. Honestly - I ate like an animal..... HA HA HA

Hi Ohio Blue Gal, I am 4 days into my pre-op diet recommended by my surgeon.

Protein drinks/shakes

V-8 or Tomato juice

Diet Jello/Pudding

Yougurt

Tea

coffee

I've found EAS Advant/edge French vanilla mixed with lite peach yougurt to be my favorite. Very palatable.

Good Luck

It is really hard to say, because it seems like just about every surgeon has different pre-op recommendations, and I believe it all depends on each individual person. I was on a full liquid diet for 17 days prior to my surgery. It was to help shrink the liver so the surgeon has more room to work during the operation.

I second the previous poster. I have heard about so many different variations. Personally, I have to do 4 weeks of Optifast starting 12/26.

i am on my pre-op diet and it is hard. i am on day 7 of the 14 day liquid diet. i have lost 18lbs so far. i dosen't seem to me that losing that much weight so quick can be healthy. does everyone have to do this?

I'm on day 5 of a 14 day pre-op diet that requires 5-6 Medifast food items a day. I chose a couple oatmeals, three flavors of shakes and cream of chicken Soup. Besides that I can have SF Jello or popsicles. SF Fudgesicles have been a godsend! The Medifast shakes aren't so bad, the oatmeal has a funky taste to it. Blech. :)

I just keep reminding myself that it's only two weeks. :cry

Hi all!

Oh goodness, I'm only on Day 1 out of 7...of my 'fat-free yogurt' only pre-op diet! I wish I had choices of Soup or Protein shakes or something! I had 5 yogurts today & feel sick. This can't be healthy, can it? My hands are freezing cold as I type this, which might mean that my blood sugar is too low? I'm starving but I know I'm doing this for surgery next week. I think I'll go see if there's some fat free soup in the cupboard...

Good luck to all on a pre-op eating plan!!!! (notice how i avoided the d word, diet? lol)

Hi again,

I found this & thought some of us might be interested?

(here's where I saw it:http://www.bospa.org/Information.aspx?Page=19)

Pre-op liver reduction plan

Just because you are awaiting a surgical treatment for your morbid obesity, this is not an excuse to sit back and gorge out on as much food as you can! Any weight you can lose through dieting before your surgery is an advantage - it will make the surgery easier and will reduce the risks associated with it.

Some surgeons mandate a very restricted diet - one that is low in fat, sugar and carbohydrates - for one week prior to surgery and even if your surgeon doesn't ask you to follow this diet, doing so will increase your chances of your operation being completed laparoscopically because it will shrink your liver down in size. By following a strict diet, your body reduces its glycogen stores (glycogen is a form of sugar stored in the liver and muscles for energy). With each ounce of glycogen, the body stores 3–4 ounces of Water, so when you follow a very strict diet, especially one that is low in starch and sugar, your body loses its glycogen stores and some Water. The liver shrinks as it has less glycogen and water in it. This diet is only recommended for one week before surgery and is not to be followed post–operatively. It is quite possible you lose a lot of weight that week, but it will be mainly be water loss. Please ensure you continue to drink throughout the day.

Here are some menu suggestions:

Breakfast Small bowl of Cereal, or

1 slice of toast with a scraping of low fat spread lunch 1 slice bread or 2 crispbreads

Small portion lean meat or fish, or

Small portion cheese, or 2 eggs (not fried)

Green salad (no dressing) or tomatoes dinner Small portion lean meat or fish, or

Small portion low fat cheese, or 2 eggs, or

Tofu or Quorn based dish

1 small potato or 2 tablespoonfuls Pasta or rice

Vegetables (as many as you like except for root vegetables) Daily 1/3 pint milk for use in drinks and on Cereal

2 portions of fruit (e.g. apple, orange, banana, pear)

Free water, tea, coffee, low calorie squash or fizzy drinks

1 low fat, low sugar yogurt or fromage frais

I must be crazy because I am loving the pre-op shakes. They are really good. However, I am having a strange craving for olives. Good thing the doct. made me take that preg. test or I would be kina stressed!

I've got the call today, my surgery is tuesday, they said not another solid thing in my mouth. I asked the reason is because of glycogen?!! I am assuming you have to be on the losing end... I'm really excited.

I started drinking my Protein Shakes the week before to the get the taste in my mouth so I wouldn't be totally shocked after surgery. My doctor had me on liquids the day before to clear my digestive system but it also had the effect of shrinking my stomach. As a result, I haven't had the hunger pains so far after surgery (2 days).

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
