Dr. Ariel Ortiz NOT in Newsweek Magazine

Recommended Posts

He did my surgery just fine. Still has legit medical certifications at a Center of Excellence that you can verify.

I knew going in the Newsweek thing is advertising tool. There are a lot of docs that use the Newsweek thing for advertising...why not shame on Newsweek?. You have to do your due diligence selecting a surgeon in Mexico or anywhere for that matter.

It's like showing up in Mexico for surgery only to find out that the "hospital" isn't what we would consider a hospital at all. Got to do the homework up front to be sure what you are getting.

Hi! I'm glad you're happy with your surgery. I don't want to take anything away from that.

But I created this post speciically for people who are doing their research. Even though you did yours, you didn't know Newsweek Showcase is just a made up company. It has nothing at all to do with Newsweek Magazine. Other people need to weigh that into their decision.

I'm sure he's awesome but getting his name out there by fooling people says a lot about his integrity.

Did I mention he even did a Youtube video about his many awards and his FEATURE on Oprah? Come on now. I only checked two before I said he wasn't for me but I'm sure there's something fishy up with the rest of them also.

This is what I find most disturbing. When I began researching going to the sleeve two years ago, having been a previous Ortiz patient, I went back onto the OCC Forum to learn about how patients felt.

They have a "girl" (because no woman would act as hostile as this girl does) named "Lindsey" from Canada who was lapbanded by Dr Ortiz.

She was on EVERY sleeve commentary on Ortiz's site...lecturing newly sleeved people, yelling at newly sleeved (and wannabe sleeved people) and overall being a huge pain in the rear end.

When a few people complained to the moderators that she was OUT OF LINE as she did not have a gastric sleeve...we were all told to shove off.

I just checked two months ago and "Lindsey" is STILL being a rude, pain in the rear end to the gastric sleeve people.

That did it for me. I won't promote Ortiz if he cannot even put a muzzle on someone who has no business shoving her nose in gastric sleeving business.

(she has a LAPBAND and is the 1% who has been successful with it)

I'm not promoting anybody - nor am I tearing anyone down. If someone is on this forum to do research they should know I have had positive results as a Dr. Ortiz patient.

And I determined in my pre-surgery research that Newsweek Showcase was not Newsweek Magazine. Dangerous to assume what others do/don't know. This forum is all about sharing informaton.

Obviously not all are not fans of Dr. Ortiz. To each their own. However, the bottom line for anyone looking at surgery in Mexico should spend a lot of time verifying everything and doing their own research. This is a serious surgery and deserves more due dilligence than simply believing marketing information.

well, I sure hope they wise up and put a muzzle on dear old Lindsey. (I am sure you know who/what I am talking about @Hoosiergirl)

She does NOTHING for potential Sleeve patients but scares them off.

I never spent much time on the OCC Forum as it is so much less "active" than this site.

But bring it on Lindsey! ;-)

I was just trying to help people do their research by sharing what I found out. I didn't know so I figured other people might not know. That is all.

I'm actually glad you posted this. I've already decided on another surgeon but I did look into him when I first started deciding to go into the Mexico route and I was impressed by the Newsweek thing...I honestly assumed it was the magazine. So I'm sure a lot of other people assume the same thing...good looking out!

She is the reason three of us decided to not go back to him.

She is cancerous to his site and the moderators continue to let her wreck havoc.

very sad.

I am glad you know where I am coming from now.

I can only speak from my personal experience with Dr Ortiz at OCC and it was wonderful. I had the sleeve done on April 15th and feel terrific. I am down roughly 15 lbs and couldn't feel better. I did alot of research and OCC was the only place I felt comfortable with for my surgery. I'm not putting down other Drs so please don't jump me, lol. It's all a personal decision for each of us. I too grew tired of the OCC forum and do not go there any longer. I have seen posts that were later deleted and I disagree with that. Some people are spending their life savings to go to Mexico and get the surgery, I think they deserve to know everything that they possibly can about the service they will be receiving. So good luck to all.

He was not my doctor but I actually saw the show where Oprah went to OCC and met with Dr Ortiz with the teen about lap band years ago... He was indeed in the show and it was about him and how safe it was for a teen to do lap band performed by Dr Ortiz.... The episode was about Cassie going to Mexico an they showed all around OCC with Dr Ortiz then she had it done

Yes... I watched the show as well and he was definitely PART of the show and not just in the audience. It was roughly 7 years ago when I first started researching WLS... Over the years I had researched other Dr's and due to my health insurance exclusions I knew that Mexico was my only option financially... I made the decision in March 2012 to have my sleeve surgery and on April 16th my life changed! I have nothing but positive things to say about my entire experience.. As other posters have mentioned.. YOU have to do your due diligence when reasearching surgeons.. I researched off and on for YEARS and I always came back to Dr. Ortiz... One of his coordinators had a revision surgery the same day as me. She took her band out and opted for the sleeve. We have become great friends and Dr. Ortiz actually flew me out to film a youtube video for him. I jumped at the chance because this man and the entire staff at OCC are top notch and they helped change my life!! If I can help others change their lives by my testimony why wouldn't I?? I am featured on his site in his video section and I was only 4 months out from my surgery. I am just a small town girl that has had an incredible surgery experience and I want to let the world know!!! I have nothing to hide.. I live in Hagerstown, MD and given the opportunity again.. I would jump at the chance to promote Dr. Ortiz!! :)

I've been researching my Surgeon options and am probably going to go with Dr. Ortiz. I knew the Newsweek thing was an advertisement and I also know the Center of Excellence thing is a joke. I'm in the veterinary field and its the same thing as someone only going with an AAHA accredited vet hospital.... Piles of paperwork, notebooks full of formal protocols, and doing everything "right" on the day of your official accreditation visit does not make you or your staff "the best". But like barbbdoll, my research kept coming back to him. As for his forum, I would be more disturbed if his moderators did remove Lindsay's posts. I feel That would be biased censorship on their part.

For the Ortiz non-fans out there, I would love to hear any personal complaints and complications you've had. I'm pretty leary of general bashing statements and statistics with no proof from non-patients.

Hmmm ... when checking references about anything, the wise person discards the most vehement critics and the over-the-moon cheerleaders. It's the people in the middle -- the number of them, the results, their results, the consistency of their satisfaction over time -- that really tell the tale.

Professional services marketing -- doctors, lawyers, accountants, realtors, financial advisors, bankers, etc. -- is like any other marketing. The best story is told. That's the nature of marketing.

Social media like this board help us parse the truth we need to make ourselves comfortable.

Bottom line: Discard the extremes, ask the tough questions you might at first blush think are "rude," then trust your gut.

Best wishes to all here.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
