So, is soda a no-no because it causes pain or complications?

Recommended Posts

I'm 3 1/2 yrs post lapband. No soda is allowed with the lapband because it can cause band erosion or slippage. I occasionally will have a sip of hubbys soda if we're out to eat, but basically don't drink it anymore. My band is slipped now (thanks to my frequent vomiting) and I'm revising to a sleeve soon. From what I've been reading, they say no to soda because of discomfort. banders are sposed to have discomfort with soda too, but I have none.

So is it medically ok to drink soda but it's up to the individual on whether it causes pain - or is it across the board a no-no?

Just curious....

I asked my nutritionist about soda, she said the carbonation might cause discomfort but if it didn't then I could drink the sugar free kind. She did say no caffeine for three months because of irritation. I did drink half of a diet coke about 2 weeks post op and I got very sick and was vomiting. Guess I can wait a couple of more months after all. But in the meantime, hello caffeine free, diet Dr Pepper. (in moderation, of course).

My surgeon says its OK, as long as it doesn't cause pain...& it doesn't! But I have broken the habit...so have only had 1/2 of one twice since Dec. it all depends on you & your dr....every dr has different rules!

There are some who will say that the bubbles in soda will stretch your sleeve.. I consider this a huge sleeve myth... I am only 6 weeks out and I have no desire for soda right now... but when I'm further out and enjoying a social occasion, I may indulge in a cup of soda.

My doctor said no soda for 6 weeks following surgery and it's ok after that if you are comfortable drinking it.

I asked my doctor yesterday since I went for my consultation appointment & he said "why would you want to put all those chemicals in your body???!!" So I guess that's a "no" for him.

My doc has stressed NO soda ever again.. says the carbonation bubbles will expand and stretch the sleeve and hurt my stomach.. Im gonna stick to what he says.. I dont want my stomach to hurt and he says I will get sick too.. I wont risk it.. Im down 86lbs.. and im not going to ruin that. but everyone seems to have different opinions of what the doctor said.. just like all surgerys are not alike at all.. so I guess just follow what the doc says.. thats what ive done and things have been great. :)

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
