Banded Bulimic

Recommended Posts

Christa thanks for the explanation. I understand better now. I always thought that purging was for the food. Now I see it is for the feeling or getting rid of the feelings.

I never ate much at any sitting, but I certainly was a grazer. A little of this, a little of that, and before you knew it I was overweight. I've been feeding my "feelings" since childhood. I would sneak food and find myself to this day doing the same thing. There is something comforting about eating something without anyone knowing it.

I learned to feed my feelings, because having a very southern mom, we were fed for every emotion. If we were sad she would bake us something to cheer us up. Happy? let's Celebrate with Cookies or a cake. Struggling with homework? Let's take a break and have a snack. I have to watch her like a hawk with my daughter. My DD has some severe medical problems and everytime we go to the doctor or have to have boolwork or medical testing, she wants to bake. It's a vicious cycle, and I am stopping it now. ~Mandy

it is tough. there are so many things/issues associated with food. we don't just eat for nurioushment. alcoholics can stay away from booze, they don't NEED it for life. drug addicts can stay away from crack. but, food, you absolutely NEED. and it is hard to not use food for emotional purposes. i am not bulimic anymore, but i have to constantly check myself and my emotions and make sure that i am handling them properly and not somehow turning to a bulimic tendency to cope with issues. i thought the band would make it easier. but, i count calories and weigh myself way too much. at times i become overly focused on weight and the number on the scale or the number that is in the tag of my clothes. when i realize i am being overly focused on it (or someone that knows my history points it out to me) i have to stop and take inventory of what is going on in my life that could be causing me such stress.

Teresita--I want to start out by saying that you are such a lovely person. You always write such supportive things for everyone and you are always there to lend an attentive ear and provide encouragment. Thank you. :)

Also, I wanted to let you know that I totally understand. Honestly, I wasnt going to write anything about what I have been going through recently, but I want other to know, including you, that you are not alone.

I have been banded for just about two weeks now...and going into this I know that I have suffered from bulemia...I have such a difficult time with food, I hate it, I love it...I dont want it to f***in control me anymore! :angry

And now...I am banded and I do feel ready for these changes, but they are all so overwhelming, not including everything else that goes on in life...during the past week now I have PBd a few times...not on purpose in the sense of self inducing it...but I did it to myself by eating too much, too fast and not being able to control myself and my thoughts about food and filling that void! You are not alone!!!

Even though I felt so guilty and worthless and stupid and....after these "episodes" I know that I am worth it to be successful and be happy, I get back on the horse so to speak and I know that I have another chance.

I hope that this helps you a bit...it was difficult to share! THank you!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
