So I want to know losing say 150 pounds by your self vs surgery still gets you extra skin if not why does only wls give you extra skin

Because you lose it faster with wls which doesn't give your skin too much time to adjust and go back. When you do it yourself, it takes longer and it's slower giving your skin time to shrink with you. And typically you exercise more when you do it on your own which I think makes a difference too. I exercise to try to tone things up but I'm still losing faster than I can keep with.

Oh ok thank you :) I've been really nervous about extra skin and not having the money to get it removed =\

Your skin will continue to shrink for up to 2 years after losing weight. You appear young, in all likelihood your skin will shrink back, not as fast as you'll lose weight but given a little time I'm betting any extra skin will be so minimal that the only person that will even notice it is you(we can always find flaw in ourselves).

im 20 but I have seen some people say that age doesn't even help sometimes if you have a lot to lose and if you have been overweight for a long time.

It's true that it doesn't ALWAYS get all of the skin back into shape, but the likelihood is that most of it will find itself back in place. Age DOES matter for this. As O.T.R. said, you may be able to point out loose areas, but most if not all of them will not be noticeable to anyone else.

At any rate, I agree that if you're exercising so the underlying muscle is strong, you'll probably do just fine as soon as your skin has a chance to catch up :)

I can't help but wonder if a tendency to have deficiencies and be dehydrated more often when one has WLS leads to less skin elasticity as well. I've definitely struggled to keep my Water intake up, and I notice how dry my skin gets, and I've never in my life had a problem with dry skin.

I have heard too, for the most part, that age is on your side if you're younger when you have surgery. What age range do you suppose is considered young enough to hold out this hope? I'm hoping that since I had this surgery at age 33 (turned 34 right after) that I'm still at the tail end of being young enough to have at least a little youth left on my side. : / Also, I know that if you haven't been a yo-yo dieter, and lost and gained repeatedly, that this can help as well.

I'm with you, Ashlie, I'm one of those people that won't be able to afford skin removal surgery. However, I have so much more to lose than your average WLSer, so I know I have to maintain the reality that I will more than likely have to accept massive quantities of extra skin. I just try to hold on to the up side of the whole thing that I will still be much healthier, will feel better, and will at least be able to look great with my clothes on. :P

But we are the ones who have to see with clothes off. I get that this is going to help and prevent so many things but I'm young and I want to feel good about my body too...I am not a yo yo dieter the most I can do is maintain because I eat so much.

Oh, I know, and I wasn't really suggesting that that was what you would have to do. I just have had the same feelings on the topic you posted. I have so much more to lose than you do, plus I'm 13 years older than you, so I was saying that that's what I know may happen for me. Believe me, I want to feel good about my body too. More than anything, and I constantly pray my heart out that my body will be forgiving and become a pleasant shape and have nothing grotesque after my weight loss. I'm older than you, but I still have so much life ahead of me that I want to live too. You just pointed out a really big question and concern I've had in my heart too, so I was using your topic to share my own feelings and fears about it. :)

its one of my biggest fears next to sticking to the diet lol I was seeing pics of people who can do it on their own and it made me feel bad =\

Your skin doesn't care if you lose the weight with surgery or without. There will be no more extra skin either way. If you lose 150 pounds you will likely have some loose skin. I understand wanting to feel good about your body but having loose skin is way better than having 150 pounds of extra fat....IMO. The reason you hear more about people having WLS and loose skin is people who do not have WLS generally do not lose that kind of weight. It's so rare that when someone does it they are usually on a talk show somewhere. But WLS patients who have lost that much weight....there are many.

The odds of someone losing that kind of weight without surgery are very slim. Keeping it off is even slimmer...less than 5%. Nobody wants extra skin but I can tell you from experience it's not as bad as it seems like it's going to be....compared to the alternative.

Butter, while in general I agree that it won't make much, if any, difference in the end, I do think that it can be less traumatic when you lose the weight more slowly (i.e., with a typical diet and weight loss average of 5 lbs./month). By that, I mean you won't suddenly deflate, then wait a year for your skin to catch up - it will have a chance to come closer to keeping up throughout your loss. In the end, you may have the same amount of sagginess, but you don't ever see that extreme state that happens when you lose 80 lbs in 3 months.

You're absolutely right about it being rare for people to lose that much weight without assistance from surgery and managing to keep it off. I've watched too many people do the mega yo-yo, and I only know one person that kept almost all of it off (she did gain back about 15 of the original 140 she lost, but she was actually a tad on the too-thin side and was having a tough time maintaining that level of thinness. Apparently 15 lbs more and she had no more issues maintaining and she was still in a healthy BMI range)

Well, to start, with VSG, you should have no deficiencies, nor should dehydration be an issue after the first few weeks(never was a problem for me). We have no malabsorption issues due to the surgery, and liquid restriction is pretty much nonexistent.

As far as how long youth is on your side, well, obviously the younger the better. Our bodies are still developing & changing well into our mid to late twenties. I can tell you my experience, I am 28 years old (been 28 for 12years now) and I after 1 year have seen about a 75-80% reduction of my excess skin. Remember, your skin will continue to shrink for 2 years, so 75% in one year sounds good to me.

I haven't had a problem with excess skin but my niece had a lot of excess skin. Even though her insurance didn't cover her for weight loss surgery it did cover her for the removal of the excess skin. This is in Australia, but it may be worth the inquiry.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
