Hello, my name is Diana and I just turned 30 this past December. I've been going back and forth about having surgery for almost 2 years now. I originally was considering lap-band last year, but after attending a seminar with a local surgeon I quickly realized that it was not for me. The thought of having something plastic inside of me just didn't appeal to me, and also having to deal with a port. I have been overweight most of my life, with the weight slowly creeping up on the scale over the years. I'm currently at my highest weight. I have tried numerous diet's over the years, but just have never been successful. I wish I could lose the weight on my own, but I know that's not possible for me. I started looking into the sleeve after a friend told me he was going to do it. I went to a seminar with Dr. De La Cruz-Munoz @ University of Miami on March 26th. At the seminar they had people who went through the procedure (sleeve & bypass) talk to us and share their experiences. It made me realize that I was ready to embark on this journey to a happy and healthier me. I had my first appt last week with the doctor, and was very impressed with him and his office staff. Since I'm self-pay, everything is moving along pretty quick. I meet with the nutritionist on the 18th, start my pre-op diet on May 7th, and surgery is scheduled for May 21st. I haven't told many people, but I do have the full support of my parents which I know will be a big help, and also some of my co-workers know.

I'm so thankful for this board and everyone who shares their experiences. I know that there are risks and possible complications, but I know the benefits of this surgery outweigh them.

:)Thanks for listening!!

Congratulations on your decision and welcome! The sleeve is definitely a better choice than the lap band. I think you'll be much happier in the long run. There are a whole lot of people on this forum who have the same weight struggles as you, myself included. It's a big step to get the sleeve and a big commitment. I wish you the very best of luck. You can find the answers to most questions right here on this site and if you can't or just want to ask again anyway you will find a lot of support. Keep us posted:)

Dr Szomstein is also nice on the eyes too! Venezualan! Yummy! Bonus!! And I heard good things on your doc too. You will be in great hands! My insurance would only cover a "Center of Excellence" so I was limited on my choices but I am so happy I went where I did!! I actually live near Ft Myers on the west coast so I had to drive two hours but it was well worth it! Good Luck honey!!!

Hi Diana and congratulations. It is a huge decision.... It's normal to respond the way you have responded. I see we are close to the same starting weight. I am 5 months post op and have lost 95 lbs so far.... I hope this encourages you. Honestly I feel fantastic. The best decision I have ever made. The first few months are a huge adjustment. But then life settles, you establish a routine and the joy of your decision is shining in the mirror. Best Wishes to you! Tina

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
