24 hours after surgery

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

I had my gastric sleeve surgery yesterday and im feeling a little overwhelmed right now. I cant feel when Im full and just made myself completely uncomfortable with 1/4 cup of sugar free Jello. I cant feel my bladder, so i just keep plodding along to the toilet every few hours. I really hope I will embrace this new life I have chosen. Right now I am tired and hungry (at least it feels like I am hungry). I was told i wouldnt feel hungry yet. As I said, im feeling a bit overwhelmed and wondering if I should have had the surgery. Please tell me it gets better. I need to hear it!

It does get better. I didn't eat anything for the 1st 5 days. I was in a lot of pain and my stomach rebelled with even the smallest bites. I wasn't able to eat a whole can of Soup in a day until the 3rd week.

I could tell when I was getting full when I'd start to burp, and I'd have to eat very very slow. I'm talking 1/2 tsp every 5 minutes. I could take one bite to many and be in misery. I was still learning how much I could hold.

So try to hang in there. It does get better, but it takes time.

It gets better. I am three weeks out and doing good (besides me pulling a muscle) . Just listen to your body to know when you're full. I can eat about 2 ounces of split pea Soup and then I feel a tight chest, so I know I'm full. The bladder thing is probably from the anesthesia. My mom had a "lazy" bladder for several days after surgery once from the anesthesia. Good luck to you, you'll be fine :)

Give it some time. It does get better. Are you on an acid reducer? Most of us need that after. Sometimes acid mimics hunger.

It gets better, and it doesn't take too long :) The first couple days were pretty uncomfortable for me too. Your bladder will wake up eventually. You'll be able to do more & for longer. The discomfort will pass. Don't worry :)

I was so so miserable the 2nd day! I wouldn't have even been able to get on VST and post, so you are doing better than I was. :) You will feel exponentially better within a couple of days, and incredible in a couple of weeks. It's totally worth it! I had a problem urinating and knowing when to urinate after they took out my cathether but then the sensation came back. Took about a day. hang in there and get prepared for your wonderful new post-sleeve life!! :)

Thank you all for your words of encouragement. I feel much better knowing I am not alone. Im going to have to re-learn how to listen to my body so i don't take too much in at once. Mokee, I am on a prescribed antacid, I think all the noises and uncomfortable feelings Im having comes from my stomach beginning to heal. My daughter said I sound like i ate a monster when it squeals and rumbles. Its just gas and i know eventually it will pass (excuse the pun).

It does get better! I promise!!! Once you get home and back into your own bed you will feel so much better. I'm two months post op and couldn't be happier. I just left my doctors office for my post op visit and told them I don't feel like I have ever had surgery except that I feel and look so much better. Hang in there!!!!

Day three after VGS operation. I had a good sleep and a shower I am feeling quite a bit more normal. My bladder has woken up, which makes me very happy. i don't feel as gassy and uncomfortable as yesterday, but i think its because i am going much slower taking in my Clear Liquids. Kind of dreading tomorrow when I can start on milky liquids, but again, slow is the key I think. Thank you all again so much for taking this stranger in and comforting me with kind words and advice, its truly appreciated.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
