Dr. Umbach or Dr. Atkinson in Las Vegas?

Recommended Posts

So my husband is not on board with me having my surgery in Mexico. I have 2 insurances that don't cover the procedure. So now I have to find a local surgeon & pay lots of $$$$! :(

Help, does anyone know of a great surgeon in Las Vegas? I'm looking into Dr. Umbach & Dr. Atkinson.

Thank you,

Molly

Yes, I would totally recommend Umbach. He is not the warm, fuzzy kind of Dr, though, if that is the type you are needing. He will answer every question you have thoroughly, but is not going to sit you down and go through everything step by step. His NUT is always available and he even gave me his personal cell # to call him at any time with any concern. I liked the option of doing this outpatient because I am not a fan of hospitals. Too many sick people there and I wasn't sick. I stayed at the Golden Nugget and everything went great. I am 21 months post and still have excellent restriction. PM me with any more questions or more detail.

Thank you, PdxMan! I'm so bummed, his office is closed today. I saw that he was offering a discount to cash patients & I wanted to know if that included follow up care & support?

How was your recovery? Did you go to any of his seminars or support meetings?

Thank you,

Molly

I assume you are in the Vegas area ... correct? As my name suggests, I am from Portland, OR, so, no, I have not attended any of his support meetings. I flew in on Thursday and went to the nutrition seminar. Had surgery on Friday morning (probably why office is closed today ... surgery day). Monday morning had a follow up appt where he removed pain pump and flew back to Portland around noon.

I believe his cash price for outpatient is still the same, $10,400, which is what I paid. I have full access to the team and did call the NUT a few times post. I also did call Dr Umbach a couple times before I flew down when I had a list of questions. Answered all my questions, no problems.

The physical aspects of my recovery were great. He repaired a hiatal hernia I didn't even know I had. I had researched the procedure well and knew the first month was going to be tough ... and it is. You go stir crazy not being able to chew any real food with texture. Not following the guidelines is met with instant regret as progressing too soon can be painful.

Psychologically adjusting, for me, was the biggest challenge. I suggest you may want to make some appointments with a therapist post-op, even if you don't think you need it. I was surprised at how I mourned the inability to gorge on food. I knew that pity party would be coming, and it did. Doesn't make it easy, but my expectations were right-sized and I was able to turn that pity party into determination.

Thank you for the awesome response!

I have been through the insurance route for the lap band and decided last minute that was not for me.

I have seen a few nutritionists & 1 psych but, I do agree with you....I definitely feel I need a therapist to help me through this!

I'm definitely looking at the sleeve as a tool & not a magical quick fix....I've been on so many diets & I joke that I diet well but, not well enough to keep it off!

I've only attended 2 sleeve support groups & everyone says it's the best thing they ever done & wished they have done it sooner. Honestly, I find it hard to believe with so many food addicts in the support group that not one misses their friend....food!?

Not intended to confuse you more, but I had dr Teng. great doctor with complete follow up and support. I am sure others are good but he is in a national program of excellence. Just someone to check out. Best of luck to you.

I won't be much help. I live in Vegas and still chose to go with Dr Aceves in Mexico as he had much more experience. Also, I was alone and liked the idea of being cared for over the first few days. I needed the warm fuzzies LOL.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
