My surgery is one week from today!!! I can't believe how soon it is!!! I have been on a lower calorie preop diet for the last couple of months and about two weeks ago asked my doctor if I should do liquid diet for the last couple of weeks. He said I could but don't have to until about two days before surgery. So I have decided to start today and I am on just protien shakes three times a day for the next 7 days. I am only 6 hours in and I feel like I will NEVER be able to do this for 7 days...

Am I crazy for doing this?? I guess I was figuring to start today versus Friday so that over the weekend hopfuly the really bad hunger is not too bad so my family won't want to kill me or vice versa...

Advice?? Thoughts??

My dr requires a full liquid diet 2 weeks out and then a clear liquid 1 week out. My mom and I both had it and followed the diet. I can honestly tell you that we both had super easy transition and recovery after the surgery. The purpose of the diet is to shrink the liver since the stomach sits behind the liver and it makes it easier for them to access. I will say I cheated a couple of times but with VERY low fat foods (a slice of cheese wrapped in some turkey).

So you did a total of three weeks then???

2 weeks prior to surgery and then I was on Clear liquids 3 days after surgery and then to full liquids for 7-10 days I guess. After surgery it won't be that big of deal though. It's harder before surgery!

I had to do a full 14 days and I have to say it was the hardest two weeks of my life!! All Liquid Protein. I lost 15 pounds before surgery. So hard.

I'm on day 5 of a 7 day clear liquid diet. The first two days were murderous. I was so crabby and weak. I've been extremely weepy and emotional too. I'm not hungry anymore just a lil less energy. I'm glad I've done this and stuck to it religiously. It was like proving to myself I can change my lifestyle and have control over eating.

My Dr. requires 5-6 Protein Shakes a day for 2 weeks prior to surgery. You do not get hungry because you don't have time to with all that drinking and Protein on board! :) He does allow 4 sensible meals during that 2 weeks and even though it was not easy, (I never want to see another Bariatric Advantage protein shake) I felt better for doing it because I wanted no complications and I figured the way to get the least chance of that was to follow the surgeons directions to a T. There are so many different opinions on here from different surgeons!

Yea I find that it is crazy the extreams of doctor plans on here...every thing from ZERO pre op diet to 1 month of pure liquid...

My doc had me do a low carb / fat diet pre-op for 7 days (I did 10 but cheated 3 times) it was a shake for Breakfast and lunch and then some sort of cooked meat and vegge for dinner vegge or yogart as a snack if needed. The day before surgery nothing but Clear liquids.

It did suck.. it was by far the hardest part of this entire thing for me. I can say that 12 days post op, I am much better, and have very little "need" for food at this stage. If I am hungry (which seems rare now) I have an allowed food and I loose any hunger or craving.

I think post op is much easier to stick with then the pre-op. I'm sure those further out would probably have more room to fill, and be able to cheat if they chose. for me, i keep looking at it as life or death.. I don't want to eat something that can cause a leak, or infection to the open wound in my stomach.

I know the pre-op sucks.. You will get through it. It's only a week that you will be miserable lol. When you are about 2 weeks post surgery you will look back and be giving this advise to someone who is in your spot now :)

I did one week full fluids and one week clear fluids pre op. I thought it was going to be horrible but I planned out my Fluid intake for the entire week and had portions ready to go. I had three Protein Shakes a day. The one I used has 24 grams of Protein, 2 carbs and 110 calls I believe. I had all my broths ready to go. I are the shakes at meal times and the broth and hello in between. What I can tell you is by the 14th day I was not hungry but extremely tired of drinking, even just seeing a glass made me gag. Thankfully it's a relatively short duration so just get through one day at a time and trying planning everything the night ahead. Good luck :)

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
