Dr. Gerald Kirshenbaum - Considering Dr. Kirshenbaum

Recommended Posts

Thanks for all the replies on traveling home from Colorado. I already have a reservation for the evening after surgery. I tried to change it, but they want another $275 to do that. So, I'll travel home the next night after surgery and request a wheelchair, carry a shoulder bag and move around the plane cabin frequently. Thanks for everyone's help! Lapband people are the best!

Hey Susie B, How long is your flight home? I wouldn't worry too much about flying that soon. It really is manageable unless you have some sort of complication. I forgot to tell you, though, I was feeling so super, I kind of waited a little too long to take my next dose of medication. I was still fine, but I could've been great if I'd stayed on top of that part. Let us know how it goes.

I'm putting my weight down from my weigh in yesterday because I am retaining Water today. I'm all swollen. I hope you don't mind. Let's hear how you guys are doing. I've been too busy to do much on-line lately and things just keep getting busier.

We are down to 2 1/2 weeks left and I'm afraid I won't be making my goal, but I will keep trying. I was hoping for ONEderland. May I bit off more than I could chew! Good luck to all of you. I am all liquids for 4 days. I'm afraid I have been able to eat far more than I should so I am going to liquids for 4 days and see how I feel after that. I have had other bansters tell me how well this has worked for them to help them feel "full" after they go back to reqular meals. Wish me luck. I got a fill a week ago and I think I feel less now than I did before the fill. I have 3 weeks until I head back to see Dr. K.

I was really sick this week.... I had strep. The good news is that I lost 5.4 pounds this week. I guess that's what happens when your throat is so sore you can't eat or drink, huh???

Has anyone had any trouble on their flights home after surgery? My flight is around 5PM the following day. Also, was it difficult walking through a large airport right after surgery? I'll be flying into Atlanta, mega-huge airport. Thanks!

HI there, I just went throught this exact scenario yesterday. My surgery with Dr Kirshenbaum was 3/12/09 in the afternoon, and my flight (with connections) was the next day (yesterday 3/13/09). I was ok as far as energy (each person is different) BUT I did have a bad time with the gas in my gut left over from the surgery. The pressure in the airplane made it worse and I was very uncomfortable and unhappy.

It would be a good idea to get wheel chair assistance too.

Hope this helps

Tomster

Thanks Tomster, I was concerned about the gas worsening on the plane as well. All in the name of getting healthy. I'll definitely arrange for a wheelchair. Good luck to you

Hi All,

I got banded by Dr. K in December and so far so good! I've lost 30 pounds with about 60 to go. It feels so good to be making progress. The weight is coming off so fast it is really encouraging. I think I will finally like the way i look!

I'm going in to see my fill doc this afternoon and not a moment too soon. I spent a miserable night between the reflux that had me choking and coughing, and pain that reminded me of the bloaty gas pains I had in the weeks post-surgery. I'm scared. At this point I'm just hoping it's a slip that can be remedied by an unfill and a few weeks of liquids. Something like that. I'll know after 2:45. I just have to make it through the morning at work. I'm still having some of the pain but no reflux right now. Already put myself on liquids. Wish me luck. :)

I am sooooo sorry that I've been so bad about posting as of late, and I'm way behind on reading, and I missed the weigh in this past weekend entirely. My dad had surgery for his melanoma last Thursday and they had to go back in this morning as they didn't get it all. Luckily, the lymph nodes were clear though. My MIL had the lower lobe of one lung removed this morning and they found another lesion in the upper part of the lung . . . won't know the results of the biopsy on that or her lymph nodes for 2 days. Luckily, they are in the same hospital, just a few hundred yards down the hall from one another.

I will weight next Saturday. Good job to everybody who lost! Sorry for the driveby!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
