6 Month Post Op High Glucose and Insulin Tolerance Levels :(

Recommended Posts

I am over 6 months out and have not been taking any medication for insulin resistance or diabetes since my surgery in Sept. My dr just took lab work on me for my 6 month check up and I was surprised that both my glucose and my insulin levels are sky high. I am kinda bummed right now. Anyone else had this happen? I also had stopped my cholesterol meds after surgery and now I am about to have to start back on them.

I have lost over 75 pounds and have just a little over 25 pounds to go to reach my goal. I eat what my nutritionist tells me to eat. I don't cheat, not even once over Christmas. I feel great and am looking pretty good. Just a little down with the lab results.

I will go back to the doc next week to see what he says. Just wondering if anyone else had experience with this let down?

You say you haven't been taking your insulin meds since September when you had your surgery. Was this doctor approved? There are many slim diabetics out there, losing weight does not guarantee that you will lose your diabetes, so sorry :(

Sorry to hear about your bad labs. I know personally that many things can change your glucose and insulin levels. I know if you've had any illnesses such as flu or a virus, that can change your levels. Praying for them to get these under control. Congrats on your success with weight loss. :)

I also gave up both my BP meds and Metformin after surgery- really it was because I am uninsured and didn't have a prescription. I will have insurance, fortunately, by May 1, so will probably have some bloodwork done then (my six month post-op is not until June). I don't check my sugars (I didn't before surgery), but my B/P at my 3 month post-op was elevated- not like it was but still a little on the high side. Looks like I will at least be on B/P meds here in a few weeks, despite losing 80 lbs. I can relate!

I'm Type 2 & my doctor told me to stop my Glumetza (easier on tummy than Metformin) the day I start my liquid diet & that I probably won't need my meds anymore since it's all diet relate. Altho, even tho my AC1 (or is that the AC10??) always tested below 6 except for the first 2 times (2 years ago), he wouldn't take me off the meds until I lost at least 25 lbs. My last test was Friday & I tested at 5.9 but I have cut out breads, Pasta, what very little sweets I ate, & eat 5 small meals per day....so hoping that it will cure my diabetes cause even with insurance, the cost of the Glumetza is KILLING us financially!

Susie in Lima, I hope there's a mistake but if not, then just take the punches. At least you're in a much healthier state than you were before. Easy for me to say, right? But really, maybe adding more exercise can bring your sugar down ? I've heard that works for HBP as well as Diabetes. I know how disappointed you must be. I'm so sorry. Wishing you health & happiness!

Hey Susie. Sorry to hear that. Good job on the weight loss though. Its tough in Peru to stay away from the carbs. I know. I messaged you before. My wife is from Peru. I had heard that the by pass was better to cure diabetes even though the sleeve seemed to be doing it as well. A lot of cholesterol is your genes. Even if you exercise, watch what you eat and are thin, you can still have high cholesterol. While I love Peru, there medical care is not really up to par IMO. I would do the tests again just to make sure.

do you exercise because that can work a lot to improve sugar, triglycerides, cholesterol etc if you do it almost everyday for 30minutes but it has to be consistent.

Thanks for the encouragement and support everyone. I guess I need to see what the good old doctor has to say. He is the one that took me off all my meds after surgery and I guess I just assumed that I was done with all that. Now, it makes me want to cry to know that I might be filling up my pill boxes again. But, we will see what the doctor has to say.

I actually have been exercising 5 times a week between 45 minutes to an hour. My sweet husband turned our spare bedroom into a mini gym for us so we can do this together.

On the positive side, I would have been taking all this medicine and still be 75 pounds or more overweight if I would not have done this. Feeling much better health wise and mentally.

You all keep up the great work too! Have a super day!

I am pre-op at this point, going through all the steps for surgery and I am a Type 2 diabetic insulin dependent. I brought my triglycerides way down with Flaxseed oil capsules. It is a miracle to me!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Anyone had the TORe procedure? How did it go? How much weight did you loose?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
