Questions to ask Surgeon

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone!!

I'm compiling a list of questions that I want to ask my surgeon pain our first meeting. I don't want to forget anything.

So, what were questions you asked you surgeon? OR wanted to after the fact?

Thanks :-)

Sheena

I have other abdominal issues, and asked if they would fix them as well all at the same time. (Gallbladder removal, hiatal hernia) He said yes! and they would bill insurance for those procedures as well. This helps LOADS since I am also paying out of pocket and insurance does not cover VSG. By billing them for the other two, I get fixed of problems AND pay less for the sleeve! WOOHOO!

I also wanted him to be very clear about what goes on for the fisrt week of recover and what to expect. I hate suprises of the painful kind. lol!

On a personal note, I have read a lot of people on here asking about intimacy and when they can get at it again. IF you are in an active relationship, this is something to ask how your doc feels about. Some are saying wait 6 weeks, others say if you feel comfortable go for it but take it easy. Just throwing it out there. ;)

Thanks for stating this thread! GREAT DISCUSSION TOPIC!!!

Thanks so much for the great ideas! I'm one of those people that forget everything if I don't write it down. So I want to be prepared when I see him because it will be a while before I can ask questions again!

Again thanks!

Sheena :-)

Someone asked the doctor's nurse the intimacy question at the seminar.....she was very funny, she said, and I quote "When you will enjoy it as much as HE does" LoL

I asked about a drain, stitches (staples, ones that disolve, glue) and I asked about the size bougie he would use. I know some people don't think this matters, 'they are all so close in size' - well, it mattered to ME, so I asked!!! He used a 32. I also asked about a catheter. (sp?)

This group was very, very prepared and informative during the seminar and we got the nurses CELL phone number, she was 'on call' to answer questions or whatever.....not quite 24 hours a day. 7 AM - 10 PM. I called several times.

Yes, I have been reading about this "drain" in several forums and I am definitely going to be asking about it. Some have said the removal is AWFUL...and so I want to know all I can about it.

Believe it or not, removing the drain was nothing. It wasn't even uncomfortable. I was really worried about it, my palms were sweating!!! LOL

I hope so! I have read some on here say that the doc just pulled it out quickly and it hurt like all get out! I am not haning any of that. no sir. My doctor will have a good discussion about the drain removal with me. lol.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Anyone had the TORe procedure? How did it go? How much weight did you loose?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
