Westboro Baptist Church

Recommended Posts

I live in Topeka, KS. While I love my community, the one thing I detest about living here is Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church. If you aren't familiar with their name - these are the people that picket funerals with their hate signs targeting homosexuality.

Recently someone bought the house across the street from the Westboro Baptist Church compound. Today they painted it rainbow, just like the gay pride flag. :) it is very colorful, and awesome.

It will now the be the first thing the phelps will see when they come and go!

I am sorry for crashing this section of the forum when I am straight..,but it made my day and I figured some in here might get a little joy, too!

Thank you!!! I don't understand why their not a registered hate group. I bet they have tons of guns in their compound! Thank god for those brave people who bought the house they should make it a gay center for run away teens lol

I saw a few articles about the house & the guy who bought it. Pretty cool move. Nice to see the negativity that Westboro puts into the world be balanced out with some positivity.

I would genuinely find it painful and frightening to have those people in my neighborhood. I'm sorry you have to suffer them, but the gesture of the house did make me smile :). A quiet hero at work! What a great home owner!!

We get those nazi/KKK/Obama people outside of our house on occasion because we are across the street from the post office. They used to set up on our side, but no matter the weather I always thought their set up was a signal for me to turn the sprinkler on :). I've watered in rainstorms lol. And sometimes I have to really turn it up to get their area "well watered" but it makes me smile every time. Hate groups have no place in our world.

Just an FYI...they are. SPLC has had them on their hate group watchlist for YEARS. :)

Pure evil.

*sticks a head through the doorway, followed by the rest of her*

Ugh, Westboro Baptist "Church"! I wish that unicorns would go fart rainbows all over their compound. Maybe if they find the end of the rainbow they can collect a pot of CLUES. They clearly need some to relieve their unremitting asininity.

*exits the room muttering something about you can teach the ignorant but you can't fix just plain STUPID*

And....we just lost the thread. Maybe she means Obama haters? Like...as in an Obama hate group? One can hope. I dunno.

I don't understand hate groups at all. How someone can HATE someone else they don't even know is beyond me. I have hated people before, but it's never for something they've done to me. Working in law enforcement, and before as a firefighter/emt, it's easy to lose sight of things and let hate in your heart towards certain people and their actions. I will never understand how this "Church" even acts as one, or is accepted anywhere. I will never understand the idiocy put in to a group such as this, I don't even try.

Equality House. :).

I read the article yesterday, I love when Aaron purchased the place how he said some of the church members were so cordial and pleasant.......nothing like a wolf in sheepskin clothing.

This is awesome! I'm in Iowa, which is close enough that we get lots of visits from the WBC. They protested our church a couple of years ago because we allow gay marriage and have held commitment ceremonies for years before that. While they spewed hate, we made them Breakfast. :)

Since Obama is black...I think it would be safe in assuming that she meant anti-Obama. :)

A couple weeks ago, 2 of Fred's grandaughters left the compound. Yay! So brave. 1 of them was still in HS, but she turned 18. He has had 3 kids who have left now, and several grandkids. A lot of people around here have a theory that Fred is actually gay. That thought makes me smile. ;)

It is tough living here at times, because of him. We have lived here since 1998. That year my daughter went to see the Nutcracker Ballet at our Performing Arts Center. She came home and asked me, "What is a ***?" I cried. Same scenario two years later when my son went with his class. My husband and I were the youth directors at our church for 10 years, and we ran into them frequently. One time at a community event, I was having a hard time finding the church that was sponsoring. It was in the middle of a residential area. I turned around a couple times before I saw WB getting their signs out of their trunks. I parked behind them, waited till they were a few yeards in front of us, then started that way. They led me to the church, where they started getting set up for their protest.

I walked up to Shirley Phelps Roper and and said, "I just wanted to thank you."

She smiled and said, "I am not not sure why, but you are welcome."

I replied, "Well, I couldn't find this place. I drove around and around looking for it, and then I saw you guys. You led me straight here. Without you, I amy never have found it!"

She called me a ***** and a ****. :) That wasn't the first time..and it wasn't the last time. :)

I am always proud of the way Topeka rallies against them. Recently, we had two police officers killed in the line of duty. There were thousands and thousands of people that lined the entire parade route so that the Phelps couldn't protest. The funerals and memorials lasted all day, and there were people working together in shifts taking care of our law enforcement families. :)

She does live in Alaska... You know Sarah Palin?

Just saying.... :P

Ps I love Obama! And I would love him if white, black or even Portuguese !

I won't hold that against you. :) I would like him better if my husband wasn't getting ready to lose his job. ;)

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
