What should be tested during labs/blood work? Any specifics....

Recommended Posts

I was self pay, had the sleeve done in Mexico. I am approaching my 2 month mark and had not had a follow up appointment yet... actually my PCP doesnt even know I had the sleeve. I did have blood work done about a month before getting my sleeve done so there is something to compare to.

Anyways, I wanted to ask if there are any specific test that needs to be added to the basic lab work. My doctor specializes with babies but is also my PCP... dont ask lol. He probably doesn't even know what the sleeve is. In my area there are only 2 sleeve DR and I bet neither would be willing to see me as a patient; they are both very busy practices with appointments being booked several months in advance and their surgery wait list is over 3 years. Chances are they dont have time for a mexico patient when they cant even service their own.

I am planning to see my pcp soon and request blood work to be done. I just wanted to know if there are any specific things I should ask be included in my labs.

thanks

If you have any type of diabetes get your A1C checked. Check for Vitamins B (12) and D. That's the big ones that I get checked. There may be others.

I was tested for the following tests. I was self pay and I traveled out of state for my surgery so my surgeon gave me a list to take to my PCP. I am a female and I don't know if some of them are gender specific but anyways they are as follows:

WBC

CBC

Comprehensive Metabolic Panel

Lipid Panel

Ferritin

Folate

Iron and Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC)

Vitamins : A, B12, D-25 Hydroxy, E, K

Hemoglobin A1C

Magnesium, Serum Phosphorus

Thyroid Stmulating Hormone

T4 Total

T3

My test came back deficient in several instances and I was happy that they were all tested. I had severe nausea in the beginning for quite a while (months) and it was some time before I could eat anything.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
