Protonix (Pantoprazole) Pre-Op - Will I be Able to Take it Afterward?

Recommended Posts

The pill is a bit larger than an eraser of a pencil. It's a ppi so I'm not sure if this one can be crushed or not. I, of course, know that I'll have to run this by my surgeon for his approval, but for now, I was wondering what you all thought.

Here is a photo of the pill. As you can see, it is oval in shape and slightly larger than the eraser of a pencil.

If he wants it smaller you could easily cut it in half. The nurse at my pre-op class last night said nothing bigger than an aspirin. I think I've found replacements for all my Vitamins except fish oil. Still trying to track down something that's not straight cod liver oil.

I don't know yet, since I haven't asked my surgeon, but I'm really hoping I can take it shortly after surgery at least since I was told by my PCP and Pharmacist NOT to crush the Protonix. The Prilosec (omeprazole) that my surgeon puts everyone on post op has never worked for me, but if I understand correctly most are on a liquid form. Protonix has been amazing and I'm hoping I can stick with it. If nothing else, we may have to switch to something else liquid or crushable for the first couple weeks, then switch back... Let me know what you find out! :)

I was able to take mine. Ask your surgeon. My surgeon gave me mine and then changed it to prevacid about 2 weeks after surgery. Due to protonix wasnt working

My dr put me on protonix post op but my pill is small and goes down easily (40 mg).

I think my pills are the same size as the ones you posted, they're 40mg, but they really aren't that big. Many people have said that they could take pills shortly after as long as they weren't any bigger than an M&M... and these (if they are the same) are smaller than that! Obviously best to ask our respective surgeons though! :)

I never had a problem taking my Protonix or my Synthroid... Both about the same size... I started taking them 2 days post op...

They ordered me a capsule. I open it up and empty in into my mouth a swish it down with Water. Pharmacist said just don't chew or crush any beads. I was also told to take 1st thing in the morning 30 minutes before I do anything so it can work its magic. You can also empty into apple sauce if u are further along.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
