I am 7months post-op and my husband and I are having baby fever! My one and only little one will be turning 5 in July and he has been begging for a little sister. Is it too soon to get pregnant? I was also wondering if someone can give me a little insight on how hard it is to get the baby weight off once we deliver our little angel?

I had to "vow" a few times to not get pregnant for a year and 1/2 after the procedure. Best bet is to talk to your doctor & make sure that your body can handle the stress & provide the required nutrients to your baby.

Well, I can understand a lot of what you're talking about.

Most assuredly you're in a better place for pregnancy (at least as a doc would view things) being more than half a year from surgery. And some doctors will let their patients try to conceive even sooner post op.

My twins were nearing the same age when we decided to get pregnant, too. I didn't want too much of an age difference, so I really do understand that part of things.

If there isn't a fertility concern I would wait one year post op but that's me. I had issues eating for more than a year post op. It wasn't until the six months prior to my two year anniversary that I could eat more normally, skip shakes if I didn't want them and had my Vitamin deficiencies under control.

Would a healthy and happy pregnancy prior to that time been possible? Absolutely. Other people have done it and had no real problems or complications.

A lot depends on where you are in your diet and overall health.

As far as baby weight, unfortunately, very few folks have come back to update post op. It could be that they're too busy or that they're ashamed because they haven't been able to lose it. I do know that of the handful of regain posts I've seen, some of them were ladies that had babies post sleeve.

But I think that the same principles that apply to maintenance/loss prior to a baby apply afterward and that a lot of this can be avoided if you're healthy, don't develop bad habits or go completely off track because you're pregnant and if you've got the emotional food issues under control.

I've had a perfectly normal weight gain with my pregnancy and anticipate no real issues shedding the weight afterward, though I do expect it to go slowly much the way losing my last twenty pounds to goal went before I got pregnant.

This is really something you should weigh and consider after seeing both your OB/GYN and your surgeon, to see what they have to say.

Good luck,

~Cheri

My doctor said you can carry a perfectly healthy baby after being sleeved it is just frowned upon. But it will not hurt me. I am 3 months post op

My surgeon's data over 9 years shows women that wait at least 2 years have an easier time keeping the weight off and have fewer difficulties with the pregnancy.

My surgeon wants his patients to use at least TWO forms of birth control for the first year or more.

My surgeon recommends waiting 18-24 months minimum to try and conceive. The risk of neural tube defects are very high before then after sleeve. My surgeon says to use 2 forms of birth control because post sleevers are very fertile, due to the excess estrogen released when shedding fat cells. I plan on waiting. Not for my sake, but for my future children. :)

It's fine. I'm 8 months post op and I am 16 wks pregnant, I'm doing just fine. Obviously people are going to say ask your doctor but truth is we all attended class before surgery and it says not to. But really, it's your decision not no one else's. so if you want to, then do it :)

My surgeon said just last week when I went in for my last appt before everything gets turned into insurance....that as long as I am maintaining a steady weight (which for me will be around 6-9 months and I will be at goal after surgery) then he is OK with me getting pregnant then. We have had infertility issues for over 2 years...we don't want to wait either...but we also want a healthy baby....so I will follow what he says. But like Christhee87 says....it is your body....no one can make those decisions for you.

Are bodies are amazing when we are pregnant.. When I was I lost weight cause everything I was eating went straight to her..I didn't want to over eat but usually when your over weight and pregnant they don't want you gaining more the. 15 lbs.. But as long as you take prenatal a month before trying an keep taking them and increase calories a little you will be fine and so will the baby.. My PCP said they say don't get pregnant cause they want to give you a chance to lose weight cause a lot of woman think they can gain all the weight they want when pregnant but with Sleevers you stomach won't let you eat that much so the food you do eat will go to the baby

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
