Got banded on 12-12-08 was very painful with herna. Now feeling better and straving. liquids are not working, any suggestions?

I too had a severe hernia that was repaired at time of my band. In fact Dr. Wynn said it was one of the worse she had seen.. Imagine that, all these years with Acid reflux and the surgery and repair put an end to that...

I think it slowed my recovery a bit. I was so sore the first week, much more than others who just had the band and no hernia repair.

Hang in there it does get better.

The liquids are tough. but I had SF popsicles, and Jello that helped. and you so want something with flavor!! I am a fan of tomaoto Soup so that was a good one for me..

Hang in there.. so worth the discomfort

Hello everyone,

I was banded on 12/19/08 by Dr. Irgau, and surgery went extremely well. I'm glad to be on the other side continuing the journey. I was on Optifast 10 days prior to surgery, then the 2 days liquids. At this point I am sick of liquids .

I'm not hungry, but I miss the chewing and flavors from food. I guess this is what they refer to as head hunger.

I sat at the table for Christmas while my family ate Christmas dinner and I had a Protein Shake , but I made it through. What has been helping me is making a chicken broth with bouillon, which takes good. And also, I was cutting small pieces of ham chewing the juices out, and spitting out the meat:thumbs_up:. It helps with the need for chewing and satisfies the need for flavor. I am so looking forward to puree days. Has anyone been allowed puree sooner than the 5th week out? My two week appt is Jan. 6th, and I will have to ask Dr. Irgau.

Oh, by the way I could not figure out how post to this thread without replying. I don't think I did this correctly.

Congratulations - I was allowed pureed after my 2 week check up, I had my surgery with Dr. Wynn. But even though the DR are in the same office they each do things a bit differently

Hello everyone, Haven't quite figured out this forum thing so I have to do a mass thank you to all that replied to my questions. Thanks! I have been for my follow up and eveything was great I was allowed to start on mushies. I have been fine with eating whatever. Of course I have healthy food and take my vitimians and protien. Eveyone is different, I healed quickly and I have even signed up for a fitness program and I am only 18 days out. My cloths are even fitting better. Good luck to everyone. :)

All the DR at CHRIAS seem to have a little different plan for how you go from Liquid-pureed-sof-regular. It usually depends on the individual patient, so all you can do is ask Dr. Iragau.

There are great Protein product out there. Right now I love the Hot Chocolate..so relaxing and soothing. I add unflavored Unjury to coffee, soups..

liquids are tough to get through, but with determination we have all made it through

just ask away with any ????

I love the Healthwise hot chocolate also, it actually taste better than other hot chocolates I have tasted. Another thing that helps me is the plain chicken bouillon in a cup of hot Water. It gives me a dinner flavor, and it is relaxing to me also. Thanks!

do you use regular bullion or the Unjury bullion. If possible it is a good way to get in extra Protein using unjury. I found mixing it with regular chicken broth or bullion gave it a better taste than just the plain unjury bullion. same as with the unjury soups.. seem to leave a bit of an aftertaste, but I add to Campbells' low sodium/low fat soups..

Happy new year everyone!

I found that unflavored Unjury is a wonderful way to add Protein to things. The liquids phase is tought, but get creative. I used to put a little of the cream of cheddar on top of some of the other Soups to give it a little different flavor.

The Cookies got me this year. I am sad to say that I gained 7 pounds from eating the darn cookies. I have lost most of that now. I think it actually stopped me from eating more once I realized how much I had gained! I made chocolate cupcakes the other day, took two bites of one, it made me a little sick. Now, I could care less about the other dozen or so that are left.

I figure I am on a journey and it is up to me to decide how long I take to get this weight off. I hope to be at 65-75 pounds lost by my anniversary date in March. I think it is achievable!

Ugh. Add me to the cookie hall of shame. :tt2: I just made my last batch tonight. I promised the kids that we would make some cookie cutter Cookies, and didn't have time before Christmas. The problem is that they don't eat them - I do.

Having little kids really does make things tougher. Not to blame them, I do realize it is my own extreme lack of self control. I probably would have made some cookies without them, but at least two batches were completely for them. The cookie cutter cookies, obviously, and I was a good girl and gave away ALL of my Santa's Whiskers cookies because I thought I was the only one in my household that ate them. Well, the next day my son was crying that they were his "favorite". So, I was guilted into making another batch - which sits in my fridge calling my name, completely untouched by him after eating one or two right away.

I really, really need to get my butt in the gym and work. Our insurance is expiring and we are HOPING that without my "morbid" we might qualify for a lower rate. DH is self-employed, and with my weight our insurance costs about 1 1/2 times more than our mortgage! Realistically I know that insurance is band-unfriendly when it comes to rates, but we have to try. It's destroying us financially.

I use regular, I can't seem to wrap my head around warm Soup, I want it hot, so I don't use the UNJURY. I get my protein in other ways. I use INJURY for cold shakes, and I use Isopure drinks, they have a good protein count.

Hi Everyone!

Hey Fairy! I'm not glad that the Cookies got you, but I am glad that I am not the only one who did it! Having little kids is really tough on the weight loss thing. They really mess with your eating and exercise!!!

I know how hard it is about the insurance. There have been times where I have had to pay for it all by myself and it really is tough. I know that as soon as I get myself into just the "overweight" category that I am going to get some more life insurance. Then I won't be embarassed by the nurse's visit! (and the rates are much cheaper)

Inhis - I think there is a Protein Powder out there now made especially for the really hot stuff. Lynn may know which type. It sounds like you have the Protein down. Personally, I find it difficult to choke down the Isopure drinks, but they are awesome for their protein count.

Does anyone know when the next St. Frances support group meeting is? I think the post band meeting is this wednesday, but I am not sure. I'll call tomorrow. I feel support group deprived since I haven't been to a meeting since November.

I have two doctor's visits this week. One is with Dr. Peters and that will be good. (Despite my weight gain, then loss in December, I will have lost a nice chunk of weight when I see him). The other visit will be annual visit. I think that will be fun because I have lost a lot of weight since last year. Holy cow, I never thought getting on a scale would be fun.......

Hello,

Had my first pre-op appointment on Jan 6th, and I lost 30lbs total:thumbup:!!! One thing though, I had chosen the Lap-Band but he used the Realize Band instead. I could have understood if there was a reason, but none was given. I was going with the Lap-Band since it has been around longer, and the pillows on the band seemed to be a better fit. Well, I guess I'll have to get used to my Realize Band and trust they won't have a recall on their product in the future :).

Also, I thought there might be a slight chance of going on the puree diet a little earlier, NO CHANCE. Well, I'm still excited, just sick of liquids.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
