Day4... Dehydration?

Recommended Posts

I'm day 4 postoperative and having trouble getting my fluids in! My urine is dark today, think I'm getting dehydrated? But can't take any more than I already am, what do I do?

I was one of the lucky ones that had no problem getting in their fluids daily and my urine was still dark for the first few weeks. Do your very best and just keep sipping, keep a bottle of Water with you at all times. I drank Water, hot tea and chicken broth. Try not to get dehydrated, this forum has some threads of ppl getting dehydrated and it does not sound fun at all! Good luck!

I honestly struggled with this.... I actually had one of those kitchen timers and set it for every 15 minutes and drank a one ounce cup..... I know it's hard .... It is a must to get as much in as possible.... I promise it does get easier..... The first few weeks are the hardest....

I had to go to hospital to get rehydrated, it took 3 hours and 2 bags to do the trick. I sure felt better though. First I tried just ice Water, made me sicker, then after rehydrating I started drinking poweraide zero watered down, room temp. That helped a lot. Now I can tolerate ice again and am doing much better. 7 weeks out.

I understand. Well I would eat the SF popsicles all day and SF Power Aid, that seemed to really help. good luck.

Experiment with the temperature, consistency, and flavor. I get slightly flavored room temp Water down the best. I am a week out and just now getting most of my water in.

My doctor suggested getting medicine cups (which hold about 30 mLs) and to sip sip sip. About 4 medicine cups per hour. But make sure you listen to your body... dehydration can be very dangerous and you need to seek prompt medical attention if you begin to feel worse.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
