Question for Experienced bandsters....

Recommended Posts

Was there a time in your weight loss journey that it all seemed to "click"? I mean, I am 5 months out and I still watch what I eat, log calories, etc. Granted, I have no fill at this time. But, do you eventually get used to the band, the portions, the foods to avoid, or is it a constant thought? I am hoping to stop obsessing over food and weight, but that has yet to happen or even decrease for that matter!:help:

I'm not far ahead of you, only a couple of months...but I did find a difference with my last fill. I had one fill at about 7 weeks out, and it made some difference, tho not a lot. Then 5 weeks later I had another fill, bringing my total fill at this time to 1.75cc.'s. I had very good restriction at that time. It has all but eliminated my hunger, I cannot remember really being hungry since the last fill. I fill up very quickly. I have had a few problems when I have not chewed properly, but that's about it. Once I wasn't hungry, I quit thinking about food the same way. Then I could make wise choices, and make them on MY time, not my stomachs time. Before, I was always hungry so always thinking about food...and would get so hungry I just started eating anything and everything in sight. I don't ever do that anymore...I know when I need to eat, so I do, but I choose better foods, because I know that is what I should do!!! Now I still get head hunger, and cravings for things, even tho I am not actually hungry. And I eat the things I want. I know better---but Istill do it!! I am getting better, but I want this to be a way of life, and I do not want to be on a diet the rest of my life...so I try to keep the "all things in moderation" in mind.

Maybe when you do go for a refill, if you can gt to a good restriction without it being over full---then you can quit stressing or obssessing over food. It is VERY easy to do!!! I did too, prior to the last fill.

Good Luck!!!

Kat

Hmm, I will say that these days, the smaller portion thing is automatic. I no longer serve myself too much food, and the small amount doesnt look weird on the plate to me.

But I will always always have to work at not eating when I'm not hungry. Hunger is the least of reasons to eat, lol. I do eat just because its there, and I dont think that will go away.

Yes and no. I've been banded 10 months, and have plenty of restriction. I don't really obsess about wanting foods any more, but I DO have to think about what I'm eating and when I'm eating it. "When" I'm eating it because I have a tendency to skip meals. "What" I'm eating because I really have to stop and think about how the band feels at that particular time. How tight it feels determines what I can and can't eat. Even when I am eating, I have to be very mindful of the size of bites and how quickly I'm eating.

Even though it feels pretty "routine" right now, I don't think that living with the band will ever be automatic for me. But then, that's a good thing...because NOT thinking about what I'm eating is what got me fat in the first place.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
