Question about Positive side effects

Recommended Posts

I know a lot of you have reported that you no longer need to take Blood pressure and Lipid meds. Most report higher energy. Some of you have claimed sleep apnea has gone away etc...

What other positive changes you have seen after VSG like skin conditions, Knees, Back etc....???

Yes! My knees don't hurt when I get up out of a chair to stand and I don't make the "uhhhh" noise like I'm 80 when I do get up! Lol! And my skin has cleared up! Prior to surgery I used to get acne occasionally and since my face is clear! I still have sleep apnea but it's not severe anymore. And my bp is great now, it was high before surgery. And energy, wow! I love it!

I have shoulders! >.> No, seriously. I have them. They're defined. They look awesome in an off the shoulder shirt.

My BP has gone down drastically, though. I am 130/70 without medication, where I would normally be upwards of 200 without.

I have to say that pretty much everything I do is just a little better/easier now! ;) I can easily walk my stairs now, no heavy breathing at the top holding my chest anymore! I can get in and out of my vehicle more easily and buckling up is no longer strangling my poor neck! I can bend down to tie my shoes. I leave a 12 hour shift at work without the horrible leg/back pain (still worn out because it is a long shift to be active). Hmmm, I know there are more. I love knowing that I will go into my room and find something that fits...or if it doesn't that everything is too big! I can now carry/hold my son for more than 2 minutes! I can play with my 2y/o for more than 5 minutes now. I love howmuch easier it is to just move, I have better range of motion and I just feel better! ;)

I have collar bones again and my shoulders don't look like I am a football player anymore. The main thing is that my feet, ankles, knees and back don't hurt after a days work anymore. Love it!

My skin has never been smoother. My cholesterol is 140 down from 214. My lipids are 133 down from 190. My liver is no longer throwing enzymes. My blood pressure is normally 115-120/55-65 down from 150-130/100-80. I can have sex in any position and breath. I don't pee my underwear anymore when coughing, sneezing, picking something up, laughing or farting.(lol) my lady parts don't stink anymore. I don't sweat like a stuffed pig in the fire anymore. I can cross my legs. I can fit into my bath tub and soak!i don't have to wait for the handicapped bathroom stall anymore, I fit in the regular one. When i am eating in public no one stares at me....like omg...why is she eating that? All the seat belts fit for everything. I can go on all the amusement park rides! I get checked out by the opposite sex. My self confidence is back. And there are so many more...but I would have to write a book to get them all. The best good side effect would be that I am living life to the fullest again...if there is something I want to do I don't think...can I do that? I know I can! I feel so blessed and lucky! :)

WOW all such great things to hear! MrsG & SassyGirl very interesting about the skin clearing up, I wonder if I will see similar results as I tend to have very oily skin with clogged pours and such. I think it has a lot to do with all the fat in my blood (High triglycerides)That would be awesome if I seen an improvement there.

I had little pimples all over my arms and legs, plus blackheads would form on my thighs and in cracks, sometimes blisters...that is all gone now. My kids were giving me a massage as a present and they were both like...omg mom your skin is so soft, what do you do to get it so soft? I had to laugh! Lol :)

Thanks for posting this! My knees have really become bothersome. They hurt even when I'm not using them. And (TMI) they have made my favorite sexual positions really painful. As a result of having unsatisfying/embarrassing moments of intimacy I've been emotional and felt bad about myself. My partner has been super understanding and supportive. But, one of my main fears is that my knees will still be problematic and hinder me from a lot of physical activities. I'm glad to hear that knee pain has resolved for some other sleevers.

I have ankles .. And I can actually see them :). My knees don't hurt anymore- neither does my back. I can go up a flight of stairs without gasping for air at the top I now shop in misses and the clothes are much nicer and definitely more of a selection. I can button my winter coat and put my boots on without leaning sideways to do it.

I love my sleeve.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
