what do we have to do to get food commercials Banned?

Recommended Posts

You're telling me you had no idea the things you were eating weren't healthy? A picture doesn't make you fat. A description does not make you fat. All the commercials in the world will not make me go somewhere I don't want to go and eat something I don't want to eat. I take responsibility for the fact that I ate and ate and ate until I was nearly 400 pounds. Comparing cigarettes' date=' which aren't needed in any way (though there are days I miss them!) and contain upwards of 4,000 chemicals each, to food, which is required if you'd like to continue living, is a false analogy.

And yes, if I saw them put the whole stick of butter in it, I would eat it. I have eaten it. Hell, I've cooked things that I put a whole stick of butter (and more) in. I make some amazing fudge and it took more than a stick of butter per batch. At the time I found it to be absolutely delicious. Now that I've not had much sugar in a long time, it'd probably set my teeth on edge.[/quote']

Maybe you are the only one in America who doesnt see or hear these commercials, but I bet you 99.99% of Americans have. These commercials pull you in when you are your hungriest and weakest! They prey on you to get your money! The food industry dont care if you become obeist from their food, hell most of their workers are obeist from eating their food. The point I was making is that resturants are one of the causes for America being so over weight because of their comercials. The reason being is because we are human and see the easiest way there is to feed ourselves.

Laura-ven, I was just reading that same article! The meeting between all the companies that it described reminds me of the tobacco memos.

Personally, I don't think we need to ban commercials. We need to change our buying habits, and it will make changes happen.

I've seen them, to be sure. I've seen advertisements for a lot of things, some of which aren't referable in polite company. Putting the blame only on restaurants or only on commercials negates the fact that ultimately, they aren't tying you to a chair and forcing you to order and eat. I'm not saying that it's not difficult to live surrounded by the very things we're addicted to, but that goes for any addiction. Being surrounded by smokers when I was quitting made me a generally unpleasant person when I couldn't get away from the habit I was trying to kick. The reason I'm standing so firmly on this is because I've not noticed a single thing regarding personal responsibility for the choices made when it comes to our health. These things exist, yes, but it isn't McDonald's fault I'm fat. It's the fact that I liked to eat a 20 piece McNugget Breakfast.

Would it be terribly weird of me to say that you ALL have good points....

I mean, its all of the above!

It's the companies marketing CHEAP food that are ADDICTING and tempting us with memories when we watch COMMERCIALS and our weakness as an addicted FAT PERSON to consume massive quantities .

I do take 150% responsablity for my weight and my families weight and health. My family except for me always ate their meals at home because I have always cooked. As for me, it was fast food. I would see a double cheeseburger and go uummm, that what I would eat for lunch half of the time. The real reason why I started this thread was to bring attention to the fact, that fastfood has a hold on us Americans. Someone needs to find away to stop the obeisity rising here in this country. I dont know if banning comercials would help, but its a start.

I truly believe all the tv commercials and radio commercials is what has America obeist. It's also one of the reasons we fail on our diets. Wish there was a way to stop them just like they did tobacco comercials!

I think commercials are designed to have an effect, thats the entire point of marketing but I would never go so far as to say they should be banned. I have read the article thats being passed around about foods designed to be addictive, but even more tha designer junk food, the human brain itself is designed to prefer sugar, salt, and fat as a survival strategy to ward off starvation. Junk food makers produce that because they are universally appealing. I tend to think its less... sinister than people make it out to be.

In the end I think it's up to us to control what goes in and I'm not just talking about food, we have to control what goes into our minds too. Food advertising really gets to me - you know what I did? I got rid of the TV. That's right guys, I do not own a TV. I do notice that my skinny friends are oblivious to food advertising. It doesn't really bother them one way or another, so that is also interesting.

Even on the cartoon I'm watching with my son, they are eating pizza!! Haha. I would never go as far to get rid of the TV though. Every day life is full of temptation, we just have to learn to deal with them.

You know what sucks more than seeing it on TV? Smelling delicious food! I work across the street from a Shipley's donuts. It smells incredible!

That sucks living close to resturants being able to smell what they are cooking. Lol. I live very close to a few of them to, so I know what you mean.

Companies advertise to sell food period. It is their right. Frankly, cigarettes are legal and there is no good Constitutional reason why they cannot advertise. If a picture forces you to eat to obesity, I suggest that you work on your impulses.

Ban this, ban that, censor this, censor that, save THE CHILDREN!!!!!

Imagine! - the government telling people what they can or cannot say -- what they can and cannot eat.

Turn off the TV.

P.S. Ban smells.

Yep, I agree. We all have to take responsibility for ourselves at some point.

The only way in which I differ is that I think advertising to children is unethical, and in many countries targeting children with advertisement is not legal for that reason. Children have no ability to discern when they are being advertised too, and I believe it was stated that children under the age of 6 or 7 cannot always discern between commercial advertisements and regular children's programming. So thats my only exception, as for adults.... we are going to have to learn to suck it up. It bothers me too, so I do other things with my time besides watch TV.

Why are you so angry? It was just a suggestion to help with Americans to become unobeise. If Im correct American population is what 35% obeist. What do you think made them this way? Maybe you dont give a hoot about others healthcare but I do, especially the children. I think alot of crap on here smells, you dont see me complaining about it.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
