Any potential sleevers in Perth?

Recommended Posts

Hi I'm booked for late June with DR Padovan! Excited and nervous! Happy to hear any tips you may have :)

Hi Krystal.

I had dr Padovan, and he was terrific. I've dealt with a few specialists in my time, and he was the most 'normal'. Very understanding without being over the top.

I had minimal pain from the surgery, and am most impressed with his handy work!

I wasn't that happy with the care from the hospital (The Mount), but managed ok.

Where abouts are you from in Perth?

Ask any questions you would like to know. Myself and another lady (deb) were both sleeved by Padovan, so between us we should be able to deal with anything you need to know.

Cheers

That's very reassuring! I am actually in Port Hedland. Dr Padovan travels up here so that's why I went with him for the follow up side! I am waiting on my info pack which hopefully arrives today as the first one got lost in the post. I am a bit nervous but I think once I have the info and know what to do prior I will be a bit more settled! When did you get the all clear? I have two weeks in Perth from the day of the surgery so hoping that covers it!! Bit exciting, thanks for replying :)

After reading everybody's story on here, I was fully prepared for a two week 'pre op' diet, but apparently Padovan doesn't worry about that. The day before surgery I was only allowed fluids, and fasted from midnight. That's it! Too easy.

Had the op at 7 am on the Tuesday morning, came home the following Friday morning. I was a bit sick the Tuesday afternoon and the following Wednesday, but Padovan came in and told me I would turn the corner the Wednesday evening, and I did. I layed off the narcotics t his suggestion, and it was all up hill from there.

I was given the all clear last week. Padovan said if there was going to be a leak it would of happened up to 10 days post op.

I had minimal gas pain, and the incisions were not sore at all.

When I look back it has been a pretty cruisey ride, apart from the first two days. There is a fair bit of mental challenges, that I dare say will be ongoing for a while, but surgery wise, it's been great :)

Excellent, I am hoping I have a similar experience! I am preparing myself for the mental challenge and the home adjustment to start with! I think watching my fiancé have a big meal will hit home! Are you on the purée part if the diet now? Thanks! :)

Yep, am on purée, but it tends to get 'stuck'. Probably because it's not quite puréed enough, but I am so craving the chewing part of eating!

Anyway, I will need to focus on mushing my food a bit more and just taking things a bit slower.

You won't get hungry watching your partner eat, but you will still want to eat! The mental challenges are far harder than the physical!

Sounds like you are doing well. Is it at 6 weeks you can go back onto 'food'

I go on a family holiday at week 8 so I hope I am able to eat some normal food!

How are you finding it? Are you steadily losing weight?

I can pretty much eat anything, as long as it is nice and puréed up or I chew it so much it's moosh before I swollow!

By 8 weeks you will be fine. You will need to ensure you take it slow and chew chew chew.

I lost a fair bit in the first week...about 5kgs I think. I then had a stall for about a week, which was a bit scarey. I thought I was doing something wrong, but on reading this forum and speaking to a couple of other ladies, I was reassured that it was perfectly normal.

I have lost a total of 7 kg's in 17 days. The scales started moving again a couple of days ago. I'm happy with the loss. My clothes are much more comfortable and I feel great!

I make sure I eat as much Protein as I can, and have even had a piece of toast with cheese on it. Was delish after so much soft food. Yoghurt, shakes, Soups etc all go down well, but it gets to a point where you just want something with a bit of crunch.

No regrets yet! I do get hungry, but it's not the 'I need to eat anything that isn't nailed down' feeling. It can generally be satiated with a drink or a couple of mouthfuls of Protein. My partner bought a bag of hot chips at the servo yesterday. Normally I would of been drooling and pinching them, but they smelled so disgusting they made me feel physically yuck!

It's going to be a change that's for sure! What amount of weight are you aiming to lose? They say your taste changes with it and a lot of what I read the ladies don't seem to handle oil too well.. Odd how things work! Did you get a Protein powder? I got my pack today and it says I have a follow up in mandurah on Thursday but surgery on Monday! Thought I'd only just be going home that day! Hope your weekend has started off well :)

I'd like to lose around 40kgs, but Padovan estimated I'd lose between 30 and 35. Not sure where he got that number from. Maybe it's an average weight loss for people who have had VSG around my weight? He will give you a number when you see him.

Your follow up is very close to your op date! I would be ringing to change it. It makes no sense as you will be seeing him in hospital on a daily basis. It should be the following Thursday.

I got Protein Powder from the dietician. Horrible stuff. You can't taste it but it doesn't mix well with anything except shakes. You end up with big clumps of glug in your food :(

I'd like my taste buds to change to the point where they only like shakes and Soup...then I would lose a stack of weight! But alas.....the body wants to chew, and I can't ignore it! :)

Yes, I thought the follow up was a little close! I was hoping I can get the all clear by the following Thursday/ Friday so I can fly home on the weekend. I have a telephone appointment with the dietician this coming week so hopefully she can give me some direction on getting ready! I would like to lose about the same as you, but yes will wait and see what he says! Do you work? Hope you have had a good weekend :)

Yep, I work full time. Back to work tomorrow for me.

I put in nearly a kilo this morning from yesterday. Go figure! I think I might need to force myself to do weekly weighs......this is doing my head in! How can you eat next to nothing ( under 800 calories) and not lose weight???

The initial consult with the dietician is pretty straight forward. She will tell you what to expect and what to aim for.

Are you going to try and change your follow up appt with Padovan?

Yes def only weigh each week, I find if u put the scales away so they aren't in view can help! It could be Fluid or even womens business!

I have booked two weeks off so hopefully I can keep to that/ or at the very least fly home on the Monday 2 weeks after.

Yes I will question that appt on the Thursday... Seems odd!

How much did your anethesist?

Would be great to keep in touch going forward - so hard to find Aussies on the forums/video updates!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
