Low BMI of 38 would you do the surgery or have you done the sleeve?

Recommended Posts

Brand new to this, just starting my 90day diet required by insurance. I've got a BMI of 35 barely but have also struggled my entire life to loose weight and KEEP IT OFF.... I've been questioning myself weather or not I was making the right choice. I currently have a 5 yr old and 6 month old twins..... I'm so glad I read all the positive feedback on this...I have a very supportive spouse and a sister that's willing to come stay and care for the babies. DOING THIS'nnn

I had a bariatric nurse tell me about the same thing. I think a lot of it might have to do with we have no or at least fewer health issues going into surgery. That would hold true for ANY surgery we were going to have. I had no health issues at all, and had zero problems with the surgery. Easy greasy! I remember having my tonsils removed in my early 20's - I was a lot more uncomfortable!

I asked my surgeon the other day he told me its actually safer for us w low bmi n low weight than others who r higher

You CAN lose 80. I've lost between 81 and 84, depending on the day!! I went into it wanting to lose 50 0r 60 lbs. I got there so fast and it was so easy, I KNEW I could lose more, and did!!! Love, love, love it. I wasn't this size when I got married at age 19!!!

Well my BMI was 38 when I went into surgery. Every few years I went up a few more pounds. My BMI just kept getting higher and higher. I was getting more and more sluggish and tired. I had diabetes type 2 thrown at me too, which didn't help. Some people feel comfortable at a BMI of 38, but I sure as hell didn't. Not enough energy for my family, I'm afraid. I figured diabetes was just the first comorbidity I was going to get. High blood pressure was on its way too, being that I was borderline high before the sleeve. I decided to nip this weight gain in the bud because I knew in 10 more years i would have a 50 BMI, no doubt in my mind.

The sleeve was the best thing I ever did for myself for my health. My diabetes is in remission, my BMI is 20.5, and I feel much more active and energetic. It boils down to how you feel. Do you feel tired? Do you have joint pain? Are you slower than you'd like? Are you just going to keep gaining more and more weight until you ARE a 50 BMI? Why not stop the weight gain dead in its tracks?

I want to add that I am very sorry for all of those who had complications. Unfortunately, it can happen. It's a small chance but someone has to be in that percentage and it sucks if it's you. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. I figured the risk to reward ratio was worth it for me. You have to decide the same for yourself and yourself only.

I can tell you that the self esteem factor alone, was worth it to me. I don't feel self conscious when i walk into a room of people. If people look at me, it is for some reason other because I'm big, wearing big clothes to try and HIDE the obvious!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
