Started 'Couch to 5k today' Anyone keen?

Recommended Posts

I finished my C25K program yesterday. I am so thankful that I figured out how to get rid of the nagging knee pain that I've been having at the end of my runs. The 30min run was pretty easy. My plan now is to add 1 min on every run until I'm up to running 3 miles. I think my pace will put me around 40 min. It's amazing that even though I shortened my stride to get rid of the knee pain' date=' my pace has improved because I increased my cadence. I don't feel like I'm struggling to run faster either. I'm really not trying to set any personal records or anything. I just want to be able to run the whole way.

My next 5K is the Disney Happy Haunted 5K Trail Run. My first 5K ever (in 2009) was the Royal Family 5K Disney run. I love the Disney runs.[/quote']

I like your plan. Maybe I should try that. I would live to do a Disney run someday. That has been on my bucket list.

Thanks to this thread and the "100 mile challenge" thread, I've decided to train for a half marathon. My plan is to continue adding a minute to my run time every day until my 5K on Oct 5th, then use the Bridge to 10K app to get me to a 10K distance by the first of December (going to sign up for the Phinley's Holiday 10K in Clearwater, FL. Then I have 12 weeks until the Disney Princess Half Marathon. I think I can, I think I can.... Anyone want to join me? :)

I just googled "songs with 180bpm" and I got several lists including this one....

http://running.about.com/od/musicforrunning/a/Running-Songs-At-180-Bpm.htm

But now the cadence is automatic with me so I can listen to anything I enjoy' date=' but in the beginning having that music to run with was a great help. My feet would run with the music no matter the song.[/quote']

There are a few good apps for finding songs by BPM or apps that adjust your songs by speeding them up:

RockMyRun. If you register it lets you get running mixes up to 45 minutes. It has them organized by BPM.

Cruise Control. Changes the tempo of existing songs in your library to match the pace that you specify.

AudioStep. Changes the tempo of existing songs in your library to match the pace that you specify. I haven't tried this one out.

Check out www.halhigdon.com. He has some great half marathon training plans. Once you can run a 5K you are ready to jump into his novice plan. It worked great for me on my first half. Good luck to you. A half marathon is a great goal.

I was just looking at his site! :) Thanks for the info!

I'm also running the half marathon for a charity (TAPS, a non-profit that provides assistance to those that have suffered the loss of a military loved one). I posted my link on Facebook a few hours ago and I've already met my first fundraising goal ($500). My company is also matching donations up to $1,000, so I raised my goal to $2,000. I am so excited!

Just finished W5D2 barely. Now, is there something wrong with my app or am I really supposed to run for 20 minutes straight on my next session? I mean, how did we go from running 8 minutes to 20!!! LOL

I just finished w3 and I know I need to keep doing it because I struggle on my last three minute. I can do it, but I really struggle. I'm afraid to move on to five minutes

I'll be honest, I remember seeing that and thinking WTF? My first attempt at 20 minutes I intentionally ran 10 minutes then walked for 30 seconds, then did 10 more. Second attempt I ran 15 minutes, walked 30 seconds, then ran the other 5. Third attempt I finally made it. But I just couldn't see making that huge jump so I broke it up in stages and it worked well for me.

Nothing wrong with repeating a week if you feel you need to. But I'd give w4d1 a try first because you might surprise yourself. Either way, you're well on your way to being a runner so no need to be afraid. You won't fail unless you quit. It took me 12 weeks to do the 8 week program and I see no shame in it.

I had the flu last week so misses day 2 and 3 of week 7. I'm redoing week 7 this week. No big deal, it will just take me 10 weeks instead of 9. I love this program because I didn't have to feel guilty or feel like I've screwed up so might as well throw in the towel.

OMG, the 20 minute run was the toughest! I've done the C25K program 3 times (due to injuries and surgery) and each time I had to repeat that day 3 times before I could make it through it. Just don't give up and slow your pace if you have to.

I finished the program and am adding a minute every run. I'm up to 34 minutes of running and feel like I could probably do more, but don't want to add mileage too fast and get injured (had that happen way to many times!). Planning on starting Bridge to 10K in a few weeks. First day is run 10 min walk 1 min repeat 4 times.

Anyone else planning on progressing to 10K after you're done with the 5K program?

I made it through my run after nearly a week off. It went fine! Mostly a mental game.

Dee, I do plan to train for the 10k because the other times I have finished the 5k training I had trouble staying motivated afterward.

It is called c25k, you need to provide your own music. I just use Pandora and if just runs over it. Good luck, it is a great app to get us Non runners started... And addicted!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
