Lesson learned, hopefully, on mindless eating

Recommended Posts

So, I'm on Stage 4 mushy, and feeling / doing well in general. Tonight, was making dinner for the family and my teenager was happy and joking with me, etc. For those with teens, you know that's sometimes rare and to-be-enjoyed times.

I was making chicken tikka masala from a jar and decided that I would add some chickpeas into the simmer, and mush up some chickpeas for me for dinner on the side. Mushed Beans are an approved food for me, although I haven't had chickpeas yet, post-surgery.

Before long it was some for the pan and some for me out of the can as I was joking with my kid. Part of my brain said, 'You shouldn't be doing this,' although I was purposely chewing them really good.

And then the nausea hit and I almost hurled right there in the kitchen. That's only happened once before... When I had some pudding right after dinner and both times it was the same mindlessness related to just eating for the sake of eating. Didn't hurl either time, but holy crap did I feel awful.

So, hoping I didn't cause a leak but suspect not. Just my new plumbing telling me I was dumb and mindlessly eating.

mindlessly putting stuff in your mouth... yeah... I've made that mistake! my youngest and I were at Wendy's and he had a carbonated drink... I was talking and picked up his cup ( something I used to do before surgery) and took a sip... pain under the breast bone... ugh! It felt like I needed to burp but couldn't... hopefully I won't make this mistake again...

A teaspoon of softened ice cream had my tummy rumbling today! My sleeve let me know who was in charge!

You have nothing to worry about, happens to most everyone!

It's easy to fall into old habits, even once you're a vet. It's a learning process. No worries, I'm sure you're fine. It's just a matter of needing to go slow and steady. For me, at least, measuring was critical for a very long time. Even now it's all to easy to think I've eaten very little or a lot in a day but it isn't until I track everything that I see I was on target. We forget how many bites we've taken, our memory of what we've eaten is easy blurred if we're distracted.

Next time, set aside a nice little portion for yourself and see how it settles before attempting anything more!

And if it's any consolation, I was making huge batches of hummus for an event a few weeks ago and did the same darn thing. I didn't feel sick but I ate to the point of being full and uncomfortable because I was snacking on chickpeas as I was making salads and hummus. A handful here, a handful there and it adds up!

My problem lies more in getting distracted by what I'm doing and forgetting to eat regular meals and Snacks. We all have our bad habits to overcome, and some of these challenges are with us for the long haul.

Thank you all. I was so mad at myself after it happened, and so worried that I caused a leak. But I feel fine today, so assume all is OK. God, I need to get that mindlessness under control. It's only happened twice since January 8, but that's once every 2 weeks, which is too frequent.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
