Just found out I have to pay out of pocket

Recommended Posts

I just found out that my plan with BCBS of Michigan does not cover the surgery, which means I will have to pay out of pocket if I want to go through with it. I talked to my family and they are behind me. I have a doctors appointment in a few days but I was wondering, how much did you pay if you paid out of pocket?

I went to mexico and paid on my own. I had high bmi and paid $5500. so far the best money i've ever spent. 20 lbs down since surgery on the 17th and 43lbs total since I started pro op diet on Dec 28. Good luck with what ever you decide

Hi. I have to pay out of pocket too. Your doctor should be able to give you a "list" of prices. As for me, my doc is partnered up with several hospitals, and I was able to choose the least expensive one. I'll bet if you partner up with the coordinator of your docs practice, you will get lots of information from them. If you never ask, you never know. In my area, the hospitals and doctors tend to vary a bit but not by too much. If you are looking for lenders, the coordinator should be able to give you a list. One lender I contacted had the VSG as well and was extremely helpful (eventough I didn't use them). Good Luck. -Laura

I'm having mine done in Louisiana. Dr Thomas Borland. $9800. No hoops to jump through. You stay at a nearby hotel for 3 days to cut down on costs. He makes his rounds at the hotels. Really nice guy. I have about 20 friends that have gone to him.

Also check out the Dallas area, a true "mecca" of wls, I've seen anywhere from 8500-9800.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
