When was the first time post op you went UP in weight?

Hi all,

I know there are daily fluctuations, but on day 13 (unlucky?) post op I stepped on the scale and was UP 1/2 pound. After a day of exercise and under 500 cals with all my liquids this was very disappointing!

Mentally I know I will have ups and downs and that this isnt a linear journey - but would love to hear from others when they first saw an uptick post surgery - how long it lasted and how they felt/reacted?

Mine is contantly up and down!Can drive you crazy but if I've exercised I often go up before it drops down further.

Just keep on plan and dont weigh too often.( yeah,yeah,we all do it...lol)

It was about that same time for me as well. After being very diligent with everything. I was up 1.2lbs. I've done it a few times now. I don't sweat it much- the scale is still going in the right direction 90% of the time! Congrats on your loss!

I gained 11 pounds between surgery, IVs and the long flight back home. It actually took until the end of my first month post op to see a drop on the scale.

Small fluctuations are normal. Recuperating from major surgery, tracking calories and eating a very restricted diet can give us the expectation to see a consistent drop on the scale. We want immediate results for our hard work and to prove to us that we made the right choice.

But it's pretty normal for your weight to fluctuate from day to day, up and down. The only thing that really helps is adding in Water - fiddling with your diet is unnecessary. It's part of the journey that we tell ourselves we're ready for, but stalls, stops and starts (and even tiny gains) are perfectly normal and you will most likely experience them.

Put the scale away as much as possible in the beginning. In my opinion, it's necessary to weigh daily in maintenance as it keeps you accountable. But in the early months it just makes you crazy and makes you obsess about what you're eating - a habit you should break in favor of adopting overall healthier habits. :)

Weigh once a week or every few days and you'll like the results better.

Mine is up and down all the time. Last week was my first weekly weigh in where I was up, due to my monthly. I weigh everyday and record on Fridays and at 'anniversaries'. That way I see the trend and not stress about the daily number.

I go up in weight EVERY time I have a good workout. I go down initially, (due to sweating), and then up 2-3 pounds the next day. I understand most of it is Water in your muscles, they need it to get repaired. It is part of what the "pump" is.

When I quit working out for a week my weight goes down, normally below my last low weight. The Water in the muscles has drained out, fat has been evicted and muscles are built, ready and able to burn more calories and keep fatty out.

The scale tells the truth but you must interpret it's findings. If you eat right and exercise the fat will come off. I am not working for numbers, I am working for health.

Also I think with just clear Protein first week it was almost like an Atkins effect (ie with ketosis Water shredded). Now adding oatmeal and a few more things - while calories still low - a bit more more Water retained.

      I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

      Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
