super sensitive to smells now...

Recommended Posts

I'm 2 weeks post op..and I am super sensitive to smells now. Bad breath..it really bothers me and if someone has it in the room..I can smell it right away. At first I was paranoid and I thought it was me...nope its not me. This is driving me nuts. Anyone else experiencing changes in their senses?

I have always been sensitive to smells but I am even more so now. I can tell what my husband are for lunch as soon as he walks through the door after work. If he eats garlic I can barely sleep in the same room.

YES!! It's seriously causing problems too. Everything smells bad. It's so hard to eat when you're nauseous from hungry and the smells are so bad. You're not alone!

My sense of smell never changed but my taste buds sure did. Things I used to love before surgery, now taste disgusting to me, which disappoints me at times because I'd love a bologna sandwich every once in awhile lol.

I have always been sensitive to smell but after i had surgery it was 10 times worse! I smell everything from a mile away. My husband doesnt have a sense of smell at all, so he thinks i'm nuts ;)

I also have a heightened sense of taste which is far worse for me because I couldnt stomach Protein shakes anymore. I drank them everyday for months pre op. but afterwards all i could taste were chemicals and the whey. No flavoring could mask it. I would stand over my sink gagging.

I am 5 months post op and it has calmed down a little. Or I am just used to it ;)

Its awful..this woman at my work takes garlic pills..I'm about to die. Ugh. I'm also cold all the time..before surgery I would sweat!

Weird..I too drank the shakes all the time before too! Mixed them with milk and loved them. Now I'm struggling to get them down!

My smelling and taste buds were effective. I couldn't open the refrigerator without gagging from the smells. Everything tasted awful, especially all those yummy Protein products that I loved prior to surgery, after surgery I couldn't stand! Started out with hot flashes, now I am just cold. I'm 2 1/2 months post-op and things are just starting to subside.

I feel relieved this isn’t only me… my husband smells HORRIBLE to me now 😔 I feel so bad saying that but… he’s a heavy smoker and he drinks on the weekends and eats terribly… (he’s blessed with the body of a 21 year old (in his 30’s now), banging body… lucky genetics) but his unhealthy life style choices smell so bad I’m nauseated when he’s in the bed with me… I hope this goes away. He’s not going to quit what he’s doing.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
