Battling the Bulge & Fighting the Fat - My Journey to VSG

Recommended Posts

I'm 38yrs old, mother of 2. I am single and work a full time job. I have struggled with weight since I was very young, and have had "foodie" issues. I love to cook and eat good foods, healthy and other...My struggle with emotional eating/depression and low self esteem has led me down alot of unhealthy paths. I finally made the choice to do something permanent to help me become a healthier person overall and be a better Mom to my kids. I decided to have VSG. I contacted the office of Dr. Clifton Thomas on a referral from my mother (my lifelong enabler/sabatour). They were immediately helpful and talked me through my wants/needs. I had my VSG surgery Dec. 17, 2012. I'm currently on week 6 and starting solid foods. I'm having a hard time moving away from the starchy carbs I so dearly crave/love. I call myself a carb-a-holic because I can manage to avoid craving sugar/soda/chips but not my pasta/rice/bread!!! So...here I am for some support and helpful friendships. Hello, I'm MsLissa. Nice to meet you! :D

Hi, My name is Gina and welcome aboard. My surgery was September 24th and I am down a total of 45 lbs from heavyest. I use to be a sweet eater but since surgery I am now more of a salt/bread craver. Very strange but I am not complaining. This is a great way to connect and to work thru any problems (stalls, worries, questions) that you may have. Congrats on your surgery and on chosing to get healthy. As a single mom of two also I understand the desire to be healthy for our children. Best of luck to you.

thanks so much! I'm new to the whole experience, although Dr. Thomas' office offers a partner system w/successful patients to help with troubles/questions, this seems to be a great place to start for me. I'm down 15lbs. in just 6wks and have started walking daily!! It's a long road, but I'm on it and ready for the long haul!

Once i started on 'real' food....week 6, I had very little bread, I had to get in Protein first and there wasn't a lot of room left. I didn't say Pasta was off limits, but I limited the amount I ate. I'd make home made spaghetti meat sauce and whole wheat Pasta, I'd put just a little bit, I mean a little bit.....and then add sauce on top. I like round steak cooked in 98% FF cream of mushroom Soup (as gravy). I make brown rice or steamed potatoes and will eat about an 8th of a cup with a little 'gravy' on it. Yum!

thanks. it's been difficult to not crave the rice/pasta. So far I haven't really had any "bread" just the side starch to every entree seems to be either rice or pasta! I have already switched my family onto whole wheat pastas and now ground turkey! Most often I can only manage 1/4 cup/serving of anything at a time, and that helps. I'm learning to recognize when I'm full, not OVER full. I'm getting better at choosing the Protein first...I'm just starting on solid veggies/fruits. I miss my fruits and raw veggies!!! Almond butter has been good too...kills my sweet craves!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
