What is that? Does it hurt? How uncomfortable is it? I've never had surgery and I'm curious because I see everyone not liking "THE DRAIN"! Lol

It depends where you get it done! My surgeon never uses a drain. I've heard it doesn't hurt but who knows! Plus you'll probably be doped up enough not to care.

I had a drain. In truth I was afraid of pulling it out so I took it easy while it was in. I grossed out having to empty it!!!!! And lord when they pulled it out that was the weirdest feeling ever!!! I don't think it was that bad though but like I said I was very cautious with mine

I was nervous about the Dr removing it, but it didn't hurt at all!

I have a drain in right now!! It doesn't hurt but it kinda weirds me out having it in. It just sits under my shirt so I don't have to look at it. They empty it once a day and I think I'm getting it out on Thursday (I had surgery yesterday).

It's uncomfortable to shower with it but that's probably the worst thing.

This might be a stupid question but is it inside of you? Like around your abdomen? Ugh I just hate not knowing how bad the pain after surgery can be , so scared

That's not a stupid question! Yes it goes inside of me, to sit near the staples on my stomach. Any excess Fluid come out through the drain. There's no pain at all in the drain. I'm in quite a bit of pain now just with gas though. Every time I get up to walk I feel a bit better though

I had the same question - so scared of the drain! Is it sewn on? Or is it just long enough that it won't get pulled out by accident?

I'm 9 days out and my drain was removed before leaving the hospital. I wouldn't say it hurt, I would say it was uncomfortable when being removed. You can feel pressure and it took just a second to remove.

I had mine out 7 days after surgery. There were 2 stitches holding it in and it was covered. I emptied it whenever it got a little full. I was upset I had to have one but once I did, it actually gave me comfort to see less and less blood drain out. At the end it was basically clear Fluid which gave me comfort that I didn't have an infection or anything. My doc gives them to all sleeves. It didn't hurt at all coming out. Just a weird pulling sensation.

Yes there are stitches holding it in place. It doesn't hurt to get it taken out, it just feels weird. Mine stung for a few minutes after but that's it. No biggie!

That was silly of me to think I'm going to ask on Saturday when I go in

It's not silly I didn't ask about the drain until I was about to go into surgery, my surgeon explained it really well to me. It's not as bad as I thought it was going to be it just weirded me out haha

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
