Work Rumors..... Ahhhhh

Hi All,

I'm really struggling with this & would love some input. I decided to take 2.5 weeks off for my surgery, after announcing my 2 week "vacation" rumors started swirling that I was having Gastric Bypass. Funny thing is -- I'm NOT having Gastric Bypass - ha! ha! and I have told no one about the surgery. I don't feel like it is anyone's business & frankly don't want to deal with all the opinions.

Now that I've been off work I've lost 25lbs & the weight I'm sure will start falling off. I still feel like they can talk all they want, but need to mind their own business.

Thoughts?

I have had people at work actually tell me that they thought I had gastric bypass to my face... I looked at her and said, "no" and that was that. I absolutely HATE that person now and frankly never really want to see her again. What I really wanted to say was... "do I LOOK fat and slovenly enough to have that done? Do I LOOK like the stereotype you have cast in your head of someone who needs that? Why don't you keep your uneducated opinions to yourself you horrid witch."

I am of the camp that I don't really want to share my surgery with anyone, I don't want the comments, opinions or uneducated input of people that I work with. Nor do I want to hear the gossip about it. Luckily I will be quitting in June so I wont have to deal with it much longer but boy do I know how you feel.

It is everyone's own choice if you decide to share but people will gossip either way. Just keep your head high and enjoy your weight loss.

Glad I don't work!!!

That being said really if you don't want to tell don't! To me it just adds more pressure on me when I tell people because I feel every time they see me they look me up and down to see how the weight loss is going.. And then they ask "how much have you lost now" 0_o I didn't have a miracle preformed its not going to show every week! But people seem to think that it should be falling of left and right.

Right on!! I am so with you on this one :)

HA HA. One of the reasons I wanted the sleeve was so that if people asked me if I has a bypass I could say NO and be telling the truth.

Why so much hate for the person, did that person do something to you in the past? Can I ask you why you allow people that you work with that much power to anger you? "Why don't you keep your uneducated opinions to yourself you horrid witch." Personally, that would have been a perfect opportunity to educate the ill informed.

I guess I got lucky. If not for my co-workers my two week post-op diet would have been hell. My co-workers have been super supportive and help keep me honest at work. A few even attempted the post-op liquid diet to support me and now several of us are getting together to set up a work out routine. I am using my weight loss as encouragement to others. Those who decide to gossip have never done so where I would hear about it, but it would just be because they are jealous that I stepped up and took a chance to get ahold of my life. I don't judge on their choice of piercings, tattoos, hair color, wardrobe choice, etc. Don't judge me for trying to match the level of fabulous on the outside, that I am on the inside! Hold your ground! Your body, your life, your choice!

Well because first of all she really shouldn't be working in or psychiatric facility anyhow because she is pompous and often has to be be told that work is not the place to state personal opinions. Not to mention talking about other peoples bodies is legally harassment anyhow. I've had people comment on my body my whole life and this particular woman doesn't know me at all, shes had the job for maybe a month and worked a total of 6 shifts, two with me. I've already filed a complaint against her for other inappropriate comments about clients so for her to comment about me as well really should get her fired. I'm not working in an environment where those kind of catty comments come with the territory (office situations). I didn't directly say anything to her except "no" so I was being work appropriate.

It really triggered me for two reasons... First of all it was completely inappropriate for work and it's something shes already been spoken with about. And two, who randomly says that to people?? Certainly no one that should be helping people in psychiatric crisis. If it was outside of work I may have handled it differently but I have no desire to educate people about my life choices.

I went the opposite direction. I told pretty much everyone at work. I am the manager and I wanted my workers to know why I was taking time off. I am also pretty excited about my procedure and have no embarrassment whatsoever about my decision. I stand behind my decision 100% I don't care what anyone thinks about my decision besides myself and my husband because they don't live my life and they don't know my history. Along with that, I know that my weight loss will be significant afterwards and instead of hearing rumors behind my back I'd rather just say it up front and give people nothing to talk about. I've had a few people try to talk me out of it, but I'm firm in my decision. I just tell them straight...you aren't going to talk me out of it. I've already paid for it. I'm already scheduled.

I understand everyone is different. I am actually a pretty private person. I don't tell anyone my private business, but in this case I thought it was better for people to understand than to talk smack or judge me. My workers have been pretty understanding. They will ask me questions. They will ask me if I am excited. All in all, they will notice your transformation. I, personally, don't think having weight loss surgery is anything to hide or be ashamed of. Everyday I hear of someone else I know getting it done. And in a year they will just be jealous...and people who talk smack are usually jealous or have no lives, and those peoples' opinions should be the furthest thing from your mind. Just do what you do and be proud of it! Having that extra stress of whether or not to tell them or will they figure it out is a stress that is not needed going through this major life change.

good luck

I agree with lifetimeloser. And as I posted on another thread. We should be ambassadors of our new lifestyle.be open and honest.eventually they will know.or think you're dying of some awful disease because of how much wieght you've lost.might as well come clean.you might help someone who needs to make this lifesaving decision but diesnt know where to go ir who to talk to. Be proud of what you have done

Well said! I have told my co-workers also because I am very excited. Most were excited for me but others are always trying to talk me out of it or get me to try their "latest diet". I keep telling them all those diets are temporary fixes. I do not understand why they can't just be happy for me.

Tell them you went to the biggest loser ranch!!

My coworkers as all assholes and after very negative when it comes to anything positive.....there is bad case of crabs in a barrel at my place of employment. All they know is I went on fmla and instead people asking about my health they were concerned with "what I was having surgery and trying to text me to find out". So I didn't tell them anything, obviously these people could care less about my well being so screw them...lol!!!

I would have shouted it from a rooftop if given a chance!! I told everybody and Posted all my updates on Facebook. If someone has something bad to say about it then that's there business. It's none of my business what people think of me and frankly I don't care. I did this for me and not them!!!
