I just had surgery 7 days ago and I just found out that everyone with surgery is using proton pump inhibitors. Well I don't know anything about it my doctor didn't prescribe it. I am freaking out :(

I didn't have one either, I didn't have any issues because of it.

My doc only prescribed Pepcid, not a PPI. I am not having acid problems though. If I begin to have problems, I will ask him if I can add a PPI to the Pepcid (not sure if you can do both at one time).

Are you having acid problems?

I had surgery on the Wednesday last week from a very respectable bariatric team and have none either. I did see them mentioned but not even sure what it is. Possibly new/ different method. Don't worry or i would have to..lol..

My Prevacid is available OTC. Even generic. Nothing should stop you from trying it for a couple weeks, especially if you have acid or early stomach hunger which could be acid related. My docs say it is very important.

My surgeon gave me a prescription in case I needed. Post op I had it made up, just in case. I'm 10 weeks post op today and haven't needed them. They're still sitting in the cupboard. Don't sweat it.

My doctor strongly recommends one more or less as a "tummy protector" for the first 30 days. After that it's only if you need it. Basically just to lower acid levels a little to help facilitate healing.

But what he prescribed was just generic Prilosec (relatively cheap at Costco).

Hi, at my last meeting they said it was mandatory to take zantac or something like that for at least one month for the stomach to heel with no acid. Also they said acid could also mimick hunger, good luck

I wasn't prescribed any but have had heartburn quite a bit and my pcp told me I could take zantac-probably gonna try pepcid or prilosec cause zantac isn't quite doing it.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
