I can't deal with this stall anymore

Recommended Posts

Sleeved on Dec 13, lost 29 pre-op and 20 since. I have lost nothing since before New Years. I'm being good and doing what I am supposed to do. Mentally I can't take it. I didn't get this surgery so when I ate 600 calories for weeks on end I wouldn't lose a single pound. I could do that fine on my own eating much more before. I don't want to have to go back on liquids, that's not why I got this surgery either. I was exercising daily until a few days ago when gout hit my foot hard. How can I eat this little for this long and not lose a single pound? What about calories in vs calories out? What about my so called basal metabolic rate? Is it just trashed now? I'm seriously at my wits end. I know I'm just supposed to wait it out and be patient but in 2007 I lost over 75 pounds quickly on my own without any type of a stall like this. I see people on youtube with this surgery and they lose like crazy and look better every week or two and never mention stalls. I feel like a broken man at this point. VSG was my last hope as a tool to get fit but I feel like I've already gotten what my body is going to allow me to get out of it and I'm sitting here in extreme physical (gout) and mental (stall) pain. I know I lost a lot (most of it pre-op on my own) and I should be happy but I'm 346 and have so far yet to go... I feel like giving up.

How are your clothes fitting?

I barely bought a scale a few days ago, and I'm at 6 weeks out. It's nice to know how much you weigh but it drives you crazy at the same time.

Celebrate small goals. And don't live by the scale, it'll drive you nuts. I'm probably going to return mine as now I find myself weighing everyday

Not sure how you can give up with weight loss surgery. I guess if there is a will there is a way but you should put your energy towards following the plan and having some patience. Some people lose faster than others. That is the only negative I see about the forum is we tend to compare ourselves to each other and we are not alike. I have lost 43 lbs since surgery on 10/16 and it has been slower than others, faster than some, and about the same with others. i try not to think about that too often because it can frustrate you. I am just happy i am no longer gaining, i am losing and I am not suffering from dieting. I eat small amounts and I am full and I am still losing. I cant ask for anything better than that.

You will get there.. Focus on the positives and remember this is a life long journey. I hope it gets better for you soon!

Stalls are going to happen. Everyone and everyone's body is different and react differently to a significant change in diet. I had a pretty long stall myself but seem to be coming out of it now. Focus on the long term, not the short. Stay in the game, it will turn around. Make sure you are doing every last thing by the book. There's are reason for all those rules that they give you. Your body is fighting like crazy to hold on to all the fat that it can. It sucks but that's how we are wired up. Yes you do have a long way to go, but each day it gets a bit shorter, and a bit easier. Make sure you are tracking exactly and honestly what you are eating. Make sure you are eating 5-6 small meal a day, get your Water in, stay on the Proteins. There is no magic bullet here, just a lot of hard work. It didn't all go on you in a day and it isn't going to come off in a day either. Stay strong and it will happen.

CALM DOWN!!! I"m here to make you guys feel better. First, ur exactly one month out and 49lbs down... a friend of min got the surgery and lost 15lbs pre-op and a month later was only down 10lbs so woo hoo for you to lose so much in just one month.

2nd, throw the scale away.... YOUR LOSING INCHES.. measure your body... or get one of those machines that measure ur body when you hold it tight and realize that ur not dropping lbs because ur dropping inches... If u lose lbs and no inche you'd look like a square after losing al the weight.

3rd, can u still walk? Go window shopping. buy one of those trackers that tracks ur steps..

4th, GET OUT... if you stay at home ur gonna keep feeling sorry and upset and thinking about ur weight.

5th, EVERYONE GOES THROUGH THIS... my friend who i mentioned earlier is at a stand still. Do you think she's about to lose it? NO. Its normal. Dont get discouraged because if your an emotional eater you will regret it!

Know that everyone in this site.... we are all here for each other. Focus on the positive... i'm waiting on my surgery date and I'd give anything to be down at least 20lbs right now, but i'm not discouraged.

Think happy thoughts!

Good Luck... and do victory things... 2lbs down... u do something you like another 10 lbs u get a massage 15lbs down buy yourself something expensive.... 30lbs down join a social site!!!!!

AGAIN!!! IT happens... good luck!!! I'm sure you look great.. plz dont give up. we are all in this together.

The stall at the third and fourth week are very common, and if you think about it they seem to correspond with when we transition food types to purees and then to solids. When we change food types are metabolisms have to adjust to the changes. When your body adjust it is very likely you will have a good loss again. Most important things at this stage are to make sure your getting your fluids and Proteins in to keep your body in the fat burning. I know it's not easy but you need to try not to get discouraged and just keep going it will catch up and everything will be fine. Good Luck.

I posted this for someone else this morning...

There are hundreds of posts here from people who feel like failures in the first month. I bet there isn't a one of them who did not go on to lose a significant amount of weight. I think many people (myself included) expect huge loses and miracles in the first month or two because we read one post or watched a video about the person who lost 50lbs and ignore the twenty other posts that complain about slow weight loss.

My first month post op, I lost 15lbs. Usually when I do my count, I include the weight I lost on my pre op diet to help me feel better. I am 6.5 months out and am currently 203 starting from 279 before my preop diet = 76lbs. When I include my pre-op diet, that is 7 months and 76lbs averages 10.9lbs per month. That isn't super fast. It isn't the big numbers that the minority write about. It is average, and IT IS WONDERFUL!!! In the first couple of months, it was hard because I couldn't see my weight loss. The scale moved a little each month, but my body didn't look much different.

Included in this six months were at least 3 stalls that lasted two weeks. I had one stall that lasted a month where I would fluctuate the same 3lbs. While I averaged 10.9lbs per month, there was a month I didn't lose anything another that I lost 20lbs.

The great part about the sleeve is that I can't really give up. Even though my weight loss is slow to average, that weight is gone forever. I won't be able to go back to my old eating habits when I don't like the way my diet is going. I can't Celebrate a weight loss or a failure with a big dinner (always because I deserved food when I did well or poorly). Remember the last time you lost 49lbs? Now remember when you gained them back. Not going to happen this time.

After 6 months, I am completely not worried about stalls or slow loss. I am content and enjoying my new body, healthy life style, compliments and stares from strangers.

I don't think there is anything anyone can tell you that makes the first few months better. It is simply a process. Just remember that this is a journey, and you are just beginning. Believe in yourself. Don't be too hard on yourself.

Hey there. I was sleeved by Dr. E too. Congrats on your weight loss. I totally feel you on the stalls. They absolutely defy logic as it relates to the whole calories in, calories burned. I am almost 7 months out and I still can't understand them. In any case get used to them because they happen. I am a pretty average loser and I am used to stalls but it does get better. Apparently it all balances out at about one year post op. I will say this for stalls and slower weight loss and it may be part slow, part genetics but my skin is pretty tight. I have the same regular 35 year old bat wings as opposed to the really noticeable ones. No offense to anyone but I'll take slower if it means tighter elasticity of skin.

DianaE, thank you so much for your words...that hit me right where I need it. I've been in a stall since mid December, sleeved 5 months tomorrow and haven't lost since. My total weight loss is 37lbs but as you said, I haven't gained and I am eating better, I am no longer on meds and out of curiosity checked my blood sugar level and it was 83! I haven't seen those kinds of numbers in a long time. So I am grateful for that. Just need to pray for patience, in due time I suppose.

I stall hard quite often - heck I weighed 23 lbs more when I left the hospital than when I went in with all of my medical shenanigans :)

I would try and focus on your behaviours - both those that deal with nutrition and wellness, getting exercise in - and note the scale numbers but don't get too down if it gets hung up from time to time. I think it is probably very rare for folks to not have a stall - I know those are the folks that dont stall seem to exercise like crazy, do a lot of homemade Protein (hi baked chicken/fish),, and get oceans of Water in.

Don't worry - that scale will move again, just keep following your medical team's orders. Before i went to my support group meeting yesterday I looked at my food journal from last year and I weighed exactly 100 lbs. less yesterday than I did a year ago. And to think that i am constantly fighting the feelings that I am failing yet again at losing because i am not yet at goal and my husband is, when I had a lot to more to lose than him - with a high starting BMI I know it will take me longer - but i will get there eventually!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
