There are hundreds of posts here from people who feel like failures in the first month. I bet there isn't a one of them who did not go on to lose a significant amount of weight. I think many people (myself included) expect huge loses and miracles in the first month because we read one post about the person who lost 50lbs and ignore the twenty other posts that complain about slow weight loss.

My first month post op, I lost 15lbs. Usually when I do my count, I include the weight I lost on my pre op diet to help me feel better. I am 6.5 months out and am currently 203 starting from 279 = 76lbs. When I include my pre-op diet, that averages 10.8lbs per month. That isn't super fast. It isn't the big numbers that the minority write about. It is average, and IT IS WONDERFUL!!! In the first couple of months, it was hard because I couldn't see my weight loss. The scale moved a little each month, but my body didn't look much different. After 6 months, I am completely not worried about stalls or slow loss. I am content and enjoying my new body, healthy life style, compliments and stares from strangers.

I don't think there is anything anyone can tell you that makes the first few months better. It is simply a process. Just remember that this is a journey, and you are just beginning

If you get the unflavored Protein Powder you can add it to your oatmeal, cream if wheat, or soup...or anything for added Protein.< /p>

3 Weeks post-op and I have lost a grand total of 11 pounds. Whoopee Doo....

Yes' date=' I know, some are slow losers, don't compare yourself to others, are you getting enough Protein, are you drinking enough Water, up your calories, reduce your calories, reduce carbs/up carbs then reduce them again to trick your body, exercising enough? , throw the scale away, have the moon and stars aligned correctly???

I have not lost a pound since Day 10. So yes, it looks like I may be the only gastric sleeve failure....wonderful. So now what... just keep plugging along eating freaking mush, drinking Protein shakes and hope and pray....

One positive thing.. I had a psychotic scale...step on and it just goes up and down -- never getting a definitive number. I bought a scale called EatSmart Precision. It locks on immediately -- it's awesome. I just don't like what it is telling me.

http://www.amazon.com/Eatsmart-Precision-Bathroom-Technology-440-Pounds/dp/B0032TNPOE/ref=cm_sw_em_r_dp_TLl8qb1QQP8A9_tt

Please excuse my rant. I have been trying to stay optimistic but I really can't fake it anymore. Is there anyone who started out this slow and ended up succeeding? If so, can you share your story...I need it desperately.

~Dana[/quote']

I had the same thing happen to me at 2 weeks out. And many (MANY) times since. It's very frustrating.

Maybe my current statistics will help you

Pre-doctor supervised diet:338

Pre-surgery weight: 288

Today (almost 8 months out): 206.6

Total lost: 131.6

I ate a lot of Greek yogurt ...and mashed black Beans with salsa and dollop of sour cream.. refried beans...oatmeal..and the things you have mentioned. I also ate broccoli cheese Soup and Tomato Soup but I know your on soft foods so u may be tired of that..

Black Beans and salsa and a little sour cream is a great idea! I will try that today! I use to love Greek yogurt but maybe because I ate so much of it I just don't want it. I do like cottage cheese ( and I add 1 or 2 tablespoons of frozen cottage cheese to my shakes). Thanks for the black bean idea!!

Well I've been sleeved 7 months and I'm down 88lbs. I'm also in New Orleans so it's not the air lol. At 3-4 weeks I was barely able to get in 300 calories. The weightloss picks up around 600-800 calories especially if you can get some exercise in. Right now I can get around 800-900 calories and I bike 10 miles a day. I don't lose 4-5 lbs a week like I did 4 months ago but I'm still losing. I've had about 4 stalls where I'd go 2-3 weeks without losing a pound but they always break. Stalls happen, lots of things are gonna happen that will drive you crazy. Some things will improve over time and some things you just get used to. Either way you will lose the weight, just stick to the plan and your body will eventually give in and let go of the weight. Don't stress yourself out over it because that can lead to more stalls. When I'm in a stall I just think about the 27 years it took for me to reach 302 lbs. The weight won't go away overnight. I'd gladly work my butt off dieting and exercise for a year or so to undue 27 years of damage.

Thanks for writing! 10 miles a day on your bike? That is awesome. I love bike riding but I haven't done it in a few years since I gained over the last 3 years.

Love your Saints jersey! I'm sitting here watching the Falcons game --- of course I was pulling for them to bomb...no such luck this year! Go Saints!

Thanks again for the encouragement and support.... everybody's posts really did help me. HUGS!!

Hi Kristie,

You look awesome! Congratulations!

I guess I was thinking that the at least first few weeks would be more like a jump start..but I do feel better today about this. I have to remind myself that even if it's slow it's better than the direction I was heading before. I think my main fear is not that the weight loss is slow -- it's that it won't work at all. Slow I can handle..

Guess what? Dallas is like my second home! After Katrina my best friends, Jay's (husband) best friends and some of my family ended up in Dallas. We're there a bunch throughout the year. In fact, our friend Richard from Dallas is here now visiting us for a few days . What part of Dallas are you in? Hey Mardi Gras is next month -- that's a great time visit New Orleans!

Hi Sunny! I haven't seen you in a while. Thanks for taking the time to write.... I think you're right. It's seems like the majority of people lose huge amounts the first month, but maybe it's just that the slow losers aren't posting and whining much! :) I'm probably getting a distorted perception of reality...

Hugs!

I'm in Mandeville! I would love to get together....lets try to plan something...we can try to find other New Orleanians ( or anywhere around here).

I am having the exact problem......maybe it's something to do with the New Orleans air lol. I am very frustrated. People keep telling me how I look like I lost weight am I'm thinking I'm my head you should see my scale. I just try to stay positive and keep trucking along although its soooo hard. I've lost about 13 pounds since surgery and my 4th week is Monday- and I feel that's extremely slow. I am having trouble getting all my Protein in daily even though I try my hardest.....not sure what to do :-(

Yes, it does look like we're on the same type of track....we've got to keep the faith...

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
