Lost Food Desire?

I am just over six weeks since surgery (11/28/12 i was sleeved). Lately I have no desire for food, I feel hungry but when I start to eat I just loose interest. Is anyone else feeling this? I eat, mostly because I know I need to. I am just not at all into it, nothing really tastes good and I feel like I am going through the motions but not enjoying it. I guess it's ok since I have had such a long term relationship with food but admittedly it would be nice to at least enjoy what I am eating. I hope this will get better.....any thoughts???

I hope to get where you are. I've been told by my office that after the surgery, food should be just fuel, like for your car. That's what I am really interested in, because obviously I over-indulge in food. What I'm worried about is what we replace food with. The psych doc says that the surgery will take our love of food away, and we might replace it with another addiction, like alchohol, drugs, shopping, gambling, etc.

I agree totally that food should be fuel and I am comfortable with that. I just feel like even when I try to eat anything right now there is no interest. I should be getting my required Proteins in and most times I just don't want to eat anything at all. I have been given the same information as you about being careful not to replace our food addiction with something else....so far so good for me. Just wishing I had some desire to eat...I'm sure it will get better eventually.

Yeah, I hope I can get "addicted" to working out instead. :)

I wonder if it's just a transitional kinda thing. Does it make you feel sick? Or is it just apathy to eating? I really don't know what to expect. I hope I feel like that, because I am used to having huge meals. My surgery is Thursday morning, and I have been enjoying my fav foods way too much, like I'll never touch em again. How is your energy level without food? I feel like if don't get to eat, I'm just gonna be tired all the time.

I have actually had a few things in the last few days that I did enjoy! I think it was just a transitional thing and maybe some food boredom. I have been enjoying my workouts quite a bit, which is great! Good luck on Thursday!! Try and remember your first night home from the hospital is the worst and you will not feel great....but I PROMISE each day after surgery (once you are home) will get a little better....each morning you wake up will be a little better than the morning before. Sip SLOWLY. Don't worry about your energy, your body is still technically getting all the calories it needs each day, it is taking the calories it needs from the fat you have been "storing" all these years!! I am putting Protein in each day not for calories but so that my body will take the extra calories from my fat and not take protein from my muscle. We want our bodies to attack the fat. The most important thing after surgery is to get your fluids in, you have plenty of "fuel" (calories). You DO NOT want to dehydrate, drink, drink, drink. I wish you the best of luck, you will not regret this at all!!

Thanks for the inspiration and tips. I think it will be great. My pre-op was today and I wished he would've had an opening for me today.

I am about 3 weeks right now and although I don't have the physical desire to eat all of the time, I do still have it a little bit. My Water intake is astounding, and I know that I am not mistaking this for hunger. Also I am on a regiment of taking nexium twice a day so I know the hunger I feel is not related to this either.

The Good thing about the hunger is that I am able to control my eating now and not go to town on everything I see and smell.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
