3week full liqud post op diet

Recommended Posts

My dr has me on a full liquid diet for 3 weeks post op. My paperwork says I can have 100% fruit and vegetable juice but cautions to avoid high calorie liquids. I have some no sugar added cranberry juice that is 100% juice, but it has 110 calories and 28 carbs per 8 oz. Seems like that might be considered high calorie. What do you think?? Does anyone have a more precise definition on "high calorie liquids" from their NUT or dr?? Guess I'll be calling NUT tomorrow.

Since you're only on liquids, that seems fine to me. It's no sugar added so you're already cutting down on sugar and calories. Plus you might be able to get down what... 8 oz all day? By high calorie they might mean something super sweet like.. I don't know like an Orange Julius or something like that.

I was told to not avoid full sugar products the first few weeks out because our bodies need the calories.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm tying hard to walk the line and make the most of this sleeve.

No problem! I would avoid anything super sweet and frothy and full of cream like Starbucks. Confirm with them but I am guessing that's what they mean.

I did a 3 week high Protein liquid diet pre op. Did your NUT specify protein requirements?

As long as you're getting all your Protein in with full liquids that would be your best bet. Also, what is your carb limit? Mine is 60 grams a day and my protein mix has zero carbs, so juice would be okay for me and my carb count. The calories doesn't sound too bad though! I'm on a 600-800 calorie day limit. So as long as you don't go over your recommended carbs and calories while drinking all your fluids, don't stress over it too much!

As far as post op diet requirements goes my post op diet doesn't have any carb limit or Protein goal.- Only to try to get 60 oz of liquid. I can have strained/pureed cream of mushroom or chicken Soup, broth, protein supplemnets, skim or fat free milk with no sugar added instant Breakfast, sugar free drink mixes, sugar free popsicles and Decaf tea, and 100% veggie and fruit juice.< /p>

I was sleeved 12/19. On full liquids until 1/31. My liquids as in drinks are all supposed to be sugar free. I am also only allowed sugar free puddings and no fruit pcs yogurts. Lowest Greek preferred. I also had a hiatal hernia repair so I don't know why so long on the liquids unless that or if just that my surgeon is really conservative. He did tell me I had a great looking small sleeve. Don't know. Good luck!

Funny how our diets are all different. I CAN'T have puddings or yogurt on my full liquid diet. I can after 3 weeks. I was told my liquids must flow easily through a strainer.

I tried to stay away from sugar stuff but my full liquids included sf pudding, Greek yogurt and thinned cream of wheat and I put Splenda on it. I was mostly Afraid of how sugar would make me feel - possible dumping but it doesn't bother me much if I have a little ice cream or a cookie. But I try to stay away. I moved to puréed food at wks 3 but was disgusted at that by second day so just started eating reg food chewed Alot! At 5 wks now I can eat Anything in sm portions! Good luck

Nurse, are you absolutely sure you are understanding your doctor about the Protein requirement (or lack thereof). That would be the one thing that is pretty much 100% with anyone who's had this surgery (that we have a protein goal, not what that goal is). It's important because your body will start breaking down Proteins if you don't provide it with enough, ie your heart :(

My doctor said no sugar added drinks by the way. So many people see "apple juice" but don't look to see that the number one ingredient is corn Syrup. That would be a high calorie drink (as would be an orange julious heh heh) But apple juice made with apples and nothing else, would be a low calorie fruit drink. Anything with fake sugar is typically allowed as well. Just skip the corn syrup or high fruitouse stuff.

But do check again on that protein requirement...I get the no carb issue (mine also does not limit them) but I MUST get 60 g's of protein or he beats me with a wet (whole wheat) noodle when I see him.

Oh and don't advance your diet :) The doctor is smarter than you in that regard. You don't want to end up back in the hospital because you thought he didn't know what he was doing!

Not sure if I'm the nurse your speaking to but yep I double checked my paper work again. It says, "It is normal during the initital post op time to have little or no appetite. At this time, it is likely for you to take in far less than you need, but for this limited time, it doesn't present a a big problem. It is important to keep yourself hydrated using low to no calorie liquids and begin using food to teach yourself new habits that will keep you healthy and promote steady weight loss. You should not force yourself to eat."

Funny thing is that is what the drs information says but the nutritional handout from the NUT/Barriatric advantage person says, "Just remember nothing is going to really taske great for the first few weeks after surgery, so you might have to force yourself to ger your drinks down everyday."

Just called thew bariatric advantage/NUT and he said a minimum of 60, wish they would have just put that on my paper work lol

Yup I forgot to add "good" to the Nurse :) I must admit that with two docs, two nuts, and a hospital as well involved with my care, I heard kind of the same thing you did :) Just get in the liquids (my first goal was just 8 oz on day one, then double each day if possible). Protein was just a bonus, but they pushed me pretty hard to get that in by week three and I was reading you weren't getting that push I guess so I wanted to push you myself LOL

The low to no calorie thing...that's going to rule out even natural fruit juice though. Likely because the fruit sugar is still sugar and it can make diarrhea worse (which most of us have issues with during the liquid phase). So just take that in carefully or watered down so you don't make your tummy upset!

Best of luck...and you'll get through these ugly weeks soon!!!!!

Thanks for the encouragement. The Protein Drinks I have now are awful. Looking for some I can mix with Water, I think that will help. Every time I drink anything, it's like a belch fest! Not sure what that's about since I am taking small sips??

U could always dilute the juice too... so 4 oz juice n 4 oz Water to cut some of the cal & carbs...

Look into Syntrax nectars... they r the best ive found... they say mix with 8 oz water but i mix with 24 & add mio to cut the taste... but even without the mio they taste like heaven compared to some id tried! They also have sample packs from various sites that give u 1 serving of each of their 15 flavors... so u can see which u like b4 u get a big tub

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
