I have started the process and go for my psych evaluation next month. Can anyone give me any kind of idea of what to expect with the evaluation?

I had mine last week, for me it was filling out a nine page questionnaire they sent in the mail - sounds worse than it is....then meeting witht he psychologist to basically go over it. I believe she was most interested in two things...my expectations for waht the sleeve and life was going to be like after surgery. and my past attempts to lose weight. It really was not a big deal. Good Luck!

It was a piece of cake for me (no pun Intended lol) he asked me about my life, my family etc. there were questions like 'have you ever been abused physically or sexually, have you ever had anxiety' stuff about my mental health history. We talked about my life growing up. He asked me if I had a good childhood. I was honest about things and I was afraid a bit too honest but it helped me actually understand where a lot of my emotional eating habits stemmed from. He was very nice and it was a very good experience over all. Don't be nervous it's really not a huge deal :)

They basically want to know that you know what you're getting yourself into and that you are committed to making the necessary changes in your life to do so. They want to know that you're doing it got the right reasons and that you are emotionally stable to handle what's about to happen.

Thanks everyone. I just wanted to have some kind of idea about what i was getting myself into. Doctors make me nervous as is and a head doctor that could possibly hold the rest of my life in his hands might kill me. Lol

You'lll do fine. Just give honest answers. I believe that psych workers have magical powers and can tell when we are lying to them. lol

I enjoyed my session. I learned alot about how I ended up in this shape, mindless eating, & importance of support. Nice to know I had someone to call if I needed a professional to talk to. Then I got a report in the mail outlining my strengths and what I needed to work on.

Ok mine was a little different than most of these posts.... i went in expecting one session hour long, no big deal. I was wrong. It ended up being about a 6 hour lo g process in total with about 5 visits in all. I had to spend a couple hours with him, fill out about 4 test (one.being a 500 question bubble sheet) and i was really irritated with thw whole process lol i love counseling but not this particular experience lol he wrote a 6 page report on my "personality" after all this which i truely thought was an inaccurate statement about me in whole. HOWEVER i know this is not normal for.most psych evals. Apparently my insurance wants your entire life story on file lol i wish you the best and a better experience than mine!!!

I do know mine is suppose to be just a one time deal. Now how long it's going to be I'm not sure. My insurance requires the psych eval but doesn't cover it so I would assume that it is just the bare minimum they need from it.

I agree mine was a slice of cake too.

First I filled out a 2 page questioner easy

Not a lo of questions either. Then,

Got ask about my family/support. Past history.

Eating habits/ issue. diet etc.

how ready I am for the surgery. They did ask if any abuse.

And my understanding of what will take place with the surgery.questions about mental health hx. if any

But it was easy.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the help guys! I'm just ready to get the process started. I've been thinking about getting the surgery done for 2 years and finally got the kick in the butt I needed to get started. I'm just anxious to get everything taken care of to send it off to insurance. My greatest fear is that they won't approve it.

A few suggestions:

* No manic laughs

* Don't talk to yourself

* Do not refer to yourself in the third person

* Above all, NEVER show the psychologist the photos you took of her family and pets

Avoid these common pitfalls and you should be fine. And for the record, I only had those photos because I thought her dog was cute!

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
