Hi my name is Janel I had my gastric sleeve surgery 12/10/12 and am struggling with my Protein intake because I keep gagging every time I try to drink it. I have horrible head hunger I don't think anyone or thing could have prepared me for this struggle, I am hoping it gets easier. As far as the surgery went everything was fine recovery was a breeze minimal pain, I do not have any regret but much doubt in myself. I am trying to remain positive but it seems like everyday is a month and I won't be able to eat solid foods forever. On the plus I have lost 17 pounds in the past 9 days ( that includes the 3 days before surgery). If anyone has any support or even similar stories please share.

Try adding more milk/soy to it to thin it a bit, that might help if it's a thickness issue. Experiment with flavors; search shake recipes on the forum and you will find a ton of them. Hope that helps. Good luck!

Jane

glad you had a great surgery, no complications, 14 lbs post WLS - WooHoo :)

shakes can be hard to deal with :(

protein from the shakes is important - but at your early stage of one week post op, concentrate more on your Water intake - you must drink as much as possible

maybe mix shake with Water, making shake thinner, might be easier to drink

sounds like you are struggling a bit, but soooo glad you don't regret WLS

you will gradually feel better, get used to the drinking, eating - things DO get better :)

you are just opening the door to sleeveland - where you will find yourself getting healthier and happier, trust me!!! would i lie to you???? ;)

one day at a time

good luck

i know you will be successful :)

happy holidays

I almost always use Water in my shakes. So much easier to drink. The head hunger does get better after a couple of weeks. But till then it can be rough. Think of this as boot camp. It's the toughest part of the journey. But you're going to come out the other side a lean mean fighting machine.

Thanks butterthebean really inspirational. It's hard because my family is expecting me to fail because they did not support me at all having the surgery, I feel like I can show no weakness. That's why it is great to talk on this site and get all the support I need.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
