Back issues-Spinal block in Mexico?

Recommended Posts

Hello wonderful sleevers!

I am scheduled for my sleeve with Dr. J. Ortiz this Friday. Super excited. In my medical history questionnaire, I listed my 2 previous back surgeries. While perusing this AWESOME forum, I came across a post of someone who had surgery in Mexico and got a spinal block for post-op pain. This is supposedly administer after you're under anesthesia.

My question is this: is a spinal block normal procedure for sleeves in Mexico? I've contacted my coordinator, but I thought I'd check here as well. I'm concerned because I have 2 titanium screws in place of my L4-L5 disc. I've researched a little and found that the spinal block is usually administered between the L2-L3.

Can anyone speak to this?

Thank you!

I have never heard of this. I had my surgery in Mexico also. Where did you see this post? Who was the doctor?

I had Dr Aceves and he uses the spinal to provide pain relief for about 24 hours. It's given while you are under sedation. I don't know about other surgeons doing this, but I haven't heard of any.

That must be new. I know he gave me one in August. Wonder why he stopped?

Just spoke to my coordinator. Ortiz/Lopez do not do the spinal block. Big relief for me!! I get why it'd be useful, but I'd rather not have anymore needles around my back, thank you very much!

I had the same concern ( have steel rods fused to my spine for scoliosis) I'm seeing dr Garcia talked to my coordinator she said he doesn't do it but to remind him prior to surgery of my back condition

I guess they were having issues with them so we were told yesterday that they will no longer be doing them.

Dr Aceves no longer gives spinal blocks.

I called Nina at Dr. Aceves' office because I was hoping for the spinal block and this news scared me! She mentioned that some people were having issue with it (making them nauseous afterwards, issue with application, etc), but that if I wanted one, I could still have one. I would just have to say so.

So it looks like they are no longer standard for Dr. A, but can be obtained.

I'm allergic to pain LOL and even if it was the cause of my nausea the first night (could be one of a dozen factors) it was worth it. I'm a pain baby and I didn't have a smidge of pain LOL.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
