Why Aren't All Post-Op Diets The Same?

Recommended Posts

After being on this site for a few months, I've noticed that there are so many different post-op diets given by different doctors. Does anyone know why the phases are different with each surgeon?

Example: My physician suggested that 2 weeks liquid, 2 weeks mushy, 2 weeks soft food, then regular food on an individual basis. However, I've been reading about other people starting the mushy stage on week 1 and eating soft food after week 2.

What's the deciding factor?

Im not sure what the deciding factor is. My dr has me on liquids for 3 wks, so I have two more after tomorrow. THen soft foods for three weeks, then on 1-1-13, try to eat regular food...but my sister is doing the same thing, and she only has 1 week of liquids, 2 weeks soft, and then regular. I think it how the Dr feels the patient respond. When were you sleeved? I had mine on 11-20. They took out my lapband and did the sleeve, all I can say is thank goodness for that.

My surgery is tomorrow so I'm still pre-op. I was just curious to see if anyone knows why things are so different with each surgeon.

Thanks for sharing!

Surgeons actually have different procedures on how they suture the stomach during VSG. Others are overly cautious (mine is super cautious) and want the stomach to heal before introducing foods to digest. Others use different size bougie.

So yes, many pre/post op diets are different. I would follow your own surgeon's plan, but address your concerns before you go into surgery. Write down all those questions. Also, my body didn't want solids for a while, even after surgeon said okay. Might have been a mind game with myself, but I didn't want to chew for almost 4 weeks.

Congrats on your upcoming date! I love my sleeve and have no regrets.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
