I went for my 30 day post op check up and weighed 20 less from my pre surgery weight. Maybe its me but my Dr didn't seem to be amused. I told him i still feel week and get dizzy spells. He responded it may be psychological or reality, but don't feed into it.. Huh??? Did he just call me nuts??? He said if i feed into it i will start putting food in my mouth to pacify the issue. Hum... He said don't eat if I'm not hungry and eat only enough to kill the hunger pangs. That the first six months is the make it or break it stage. He is totally against Protein Drinks and says push the Water, and Protein, ie. eggs, meat, cheese etc. and i can now start with a good multi Vitamin. I feel like he's saying fly little birdy.. Fly..!!! Has anyone else experienced this??+

I've not had my one month follow-up but I'm surprised by your doctor's response. Granted, the Vitamins should help, as will increasing your fluids, but no Protein shakes/supplements at all? That's new to me. But again, I'm just a month out myself and have yet to see my surgeon for follow-up, so maybe that's the way it's meant to be.

Any veteran sleevers have any idea?

Very strange. My three week appointment was last week and my doctor was thrilled by my 15 lb loss...20 as of today. I don't go back for another two weeks but he said....lets set 8 lbs as your next goal and remember that Protein and fluids are the key...

I've also seen a lot of post from the vets that say increased Protein can break a stall in weight loss.

Baffled by your doctor ...

Total opposite of mine. I've read other people, though, who said they were getting "real" food immediately after surgery while still in the hospital. There is no single unified theory of what to do after VSG, but there's no way that Protein drinks are harmful. For a lot of us, protein supplements are the ONLY way we're going to meet that 70 grams a day.

Sure! The easiest way to determine how much Protein is in something is to look at the nutritional facts. It should tell you, per serving, how much protein a food/drink has. For example, my Bariatric Advantage shakes have 27 grams of protein per serving. My string cheese has 7g per stick. The yogurt I eat has 11. There are a lot of websites out there that will help you track what is in the food you eat, nutritionally speaking. I recommend that. If it's a food and you're not sure how much protein is in it, try googling "(item) nutrition facts" and it should bring up some websites that have the information you want.

Your surgeon or your regular doc? I find that our surgeons, while caring about our aftercare and wanting to make sure we don't have any complications, aren't really our "supporters" oftentimes. For insurance purposes, they often can't see us much...i had a one week appointment, another a few weeks later, and my next is in 5 months...so definately a fly little bird fly situation as well. I get dizziness here and there too and it is scaring the crap out of me as some associate it with a leak (though i don't have other stuff like rapid heartrate, fever, feeling super sick, etc.) so i think it's dehydration...it's hard to get enough Water.

I think docs might worry that protien drinks add calories and then we'll lose slower, but if you are monitoring what you are consuming (i use myfitnesspal dot com) and don't overeat, you'll really start understanding your body and what it can take, and what is in foods....and then protien drinks/bars, might be a helpful supplement. I think all our docs are fairly new to sleeve stuff, that's why there is so much difference in diet and opinion....not to mention that weight loss isn't the only thing gastrectomy is used for. When i looked it up i found that people used to have gastrectomys for ulcer, still do sometimes for cancer, etc...so although our "diets" are different, there is some history out there to say what works well and doesn't with gastrectomys...whether partial or full...just my two cents.

Wow..thank you for the info. This has been a very much learning experience for me. At least I'm not vomiting as when i had the band, that's a plus. Again, thank you. Your symptoms sound like mine. I'm still getting the dizzy spells and I'm very dehydrated. I can see it in my face and hands.

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
