Air Headedness- A Real Issue?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if any of you found that you have had a hard time focusing? Have you felt more ditzy since surgery? If so- how long did it last?

I'm a full-time student, and I will tell you my experience, as it relates to school, at least. I am definitely struggling with issues of memory, focus, and concentration, since my surgery (5 months ago). I'm better throughout the day if I'm able to go to the gym first thing in the morning. Unfortunately, the one day that I have an on-campus class (2 are online), I'm not able to do the gym before school....and I suffer throughout the entire 3-hour long class. Its difficult to grasp concepts, to focus on new material, to quickly translate what I'm hearing (its a Hebrew course), and to keep my mind from wandering right on out the door!! Whether its the result of reduced ghrelin, or a lingering side-effect from the anesthesia, I don't know...but I pray it will pass!!! :)

I had surgery on 9/10 - the only time I have a problem is when I forget to eat. I now set my alarm to make sure that I don't forget to eat lunch at work.

I make sure I eat regularly and that I take my B-12 EVERY SINGLE DAY. If I don't take my B-12, I have no energy and I feel like I'm in a cloudy haze all day. It might be "all in my head", but it works for me.

I'm 5 weeks out on Monday and I'm having a TERRIBLE time with memory and focus. I'm glad someone mentioned it.

I guess it's a combination of anesthesia, surgery recovery and so few calories right now. I hope it goes away!!

Thank you all for your input! I'm worried, as I am a nurse, and work is very demanding & takes a lot of focus. I think I'm going to take 4-5 weeks before going back- so that I can go back better nourished and hydrated so my focus is at least a bit better. Surgery is scheduled for Dec. 10. Wish me luck!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
