Post Op Portion Control?

Recommended Posts

Soooooo... I am having a really hard time identifying the satisfied cue... I am three weeks post op... For example, if I am eating Soup, 8 bites might be what I need... But on bite (spoonful) 8, I don't feel anything... On bite 9 - it is PAINFULLY clear that I should have stopped at 8...

Last night, I had two tsp of tuna on two ritz crackers... I was not sated, but I went to bed... Tonight, I ate much earlier and prepared FOUR tsp of tuna on four crackers... All went down fine... Then, pain... I threw it up... So, I guess the serving should be THREE... But why can't I feel when to stop before passing the point of no return? This is a really painful way to learn portion control!

How slowly are you eating? I chewed 30 times, and waited one minute between each very small bite. I think that gave my tummy time to send the signal, but I still had issues at first. I didn't try Rtiz crackers. I could eat one or two saltines and about an ounce of soft meat at one sitting.

So a typical day at three weeks was:

6 a.m. 1 cup Water

8 a.m. 1 cup Decaf

9 a.m. 1/2 cup greek yogurt with splenda

11:00 a.m. Protein drink

noon: 1 cup Water

1:45 p.m. 2 oz. turkey meatloaf

2:45 I cup crystal light lemonaide

4:30 p.m. Light cheese stick

5:30 p.m. 1 cup water

6:30 p.m. 2 oz. turkey meatloaf

7:30 p.m. 2 oz turkey meatloaf

10 p.m. 1 cup water

I have never had that happen to me. I don't eat extremely slow but I do try to chew about 20 times before taking another bite. My daily intake was about the same as Lynda's at 3 weeks. I hope you can get your intake down so you won't continue to get sick. Good luck.

I agree, eat really slow put down your fork and feel what your body is telling you. You will feel your fullness in your upper chest say at your breast bone. Stay aware of this feeling and listen to your body.

I love Lynda's schedule. Try taking half of what you think will work, wait a little bit, and then try a little more. I know exactly that feeling, though...when you go one bite too far. I'm 2 months out and I can do about 1/2 cup of food, but it might take me the better part of an hour...or sometimes I split it up into two meals. Don't feel bad if you're not getting your cues yet...it took me quite a while. For instance, about 6 weeks out, I made a turkey burger (no bun or anything, just the patty)...boy was it great. About halfway through, I was like...woah, nelly!! So I put it away and ate the other half later. Now I just start from 1/2 and go from there. Another thing....some days I can do what I think of as a "full portion", other days there will be no way. Our sleeves can be a little finicky!

3 weeks post obs, I would maybe pass on the crackers....you want to make sure that Protein stays in. As others have mentioned, the full feeling definitely is in the chest. I can still only get barely get 3 oz yougurt in one sitting....I am just about 3 weeks out post surgery. Chewing is important too....I tried scambled eggs this week.... really need to chew them well. Hope it gets better.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
