Hi guys quick update, I have been readmitted in the hospital! I had developed a fever of 101.5 all night last night! They hade me go to the ER where my surgeon was waiting for me! They did a leak test that looked fine then took me into emergency surgery, they wanted to do a scope and he put in a drain tube! Yuck

They are not sure what's wrong yet so we are waiting for test results, but he said at least 2-3 days in the hospital;(

No coughing blood...and NO PILLS!!! Why did they give you pills? That is wrong, you should have liquid pain meds. And if by some strange reason you were SUPPOSED to get pills, instructions would have been to crush them.

RED FLAGS HERE call your surgeon now.

I'm on Post Op day 3 and I'm taking two pills by mouth. Pepcid and Lofton are pills for me and they're so small that I can't even feel them. I also take a sublingual Levsin. But I consulted my surgeon after I found out that I would be taking pills and what she advised is that as long as the pills are smaller than a plain M&M they can be taken. If they're bigger than that, it will cause blockage. This is one of her FOREVER rules.

After having been on the site for only a few days (I wish I had found this forum before my surgery as it would have been helpful) I can definitely see that each doctor is different and as long as you're listening to your own personal doctor and explaining everything that is happening to you in a timely manner, you should follow their instructions. I find it very interesting how many different ways the surgery can be handled.

I almost had a panic attack after reading this and everyone saying you shouldn't be on pills but when I called my surgeon, she advised that everyone is different (patients and doctors alike) and because she's done so many surgeries she finds that people can handle the pills as long as they do it responsibly and according to her instructions.

But I would definitely say that you should make a call to your surgeon each time something seemingly serious occurs. So good instructions everyone :) I appreciate you opening my eyes to the ways others are doing things so that I question why I'm doing something so that I educate myself to the utmost about my surgery!

Wow how scary but it's good your surgeon wants to observe you for the next couple of days while you're in the hospital. I puked up blood a couple of times while in the hospital and it sucked so bad. I thought I was going to rip my staple line from all the vomiting but thankfully the nausea went away once I stopped taking the pain meds. Pain meds make me vomit.

Jessie, are you on pain killers? They tank my BP but cause no other scary symptoms that low bp can so it's just an educational moment for the docs. But each time I get a new doc they freak out at the low bp (when on pain killers). You might see if you can quit using them and see how that effects your bp if you aren't in a lot of pain....just a thought.

I was away from my kiddo for a long time! That's hard on mommy! Hugs from afar...one mom to another.

Thank you! I really appreciate this! I miss my kids sooo bad! They are just to young to visit . This is the most I've ever been away from any of them and the first I've been away from my baby.i thought it would be just for the night.

I will try the pain med thing! My original incisions are not hurting, it's the one they pulled my stomach out of and the one from my second surgery that they put the scope and drain in! But thank you for the well wishes! I'm getting kinda down today

Ask about a non-narcotic pain reliever or just try to go a little bit past when the one you have is worn off and just stay very still in bed for a bit. If your BP returns to normal within a couple of hours you'll know that it's the narcotics. It's not a horribly uncommon issue, but like me, it sounds like you are without other low BP symptoms, which isn't as usual. (I may be just desperately searching for a solution for you because we probably aren't drug twins, but it's a thought worth exploring!).

I was without my dear son for 22 days when I had my complications. I had to go to a hospital about three hours from home with a ferry ride so I only got to see him for a few hours on the weekend. It was hell, hence the hug. I cried like a baby whenever someone even asked if I had a child....and I'm normally a very very tough cookie :) I totally get where you are coming from and want to see you home very soon my dear.

My son's name is Jesse :) so I have to adopt you until you're well!

Here's a trick...if you can avoid crying like a baby about the babies when the docs are there they won't think you're possibly on the verge of a nervous breakdown :P I however didn't follow this advice and by the end of my long stay they recommended I talk to a psychologist (who pronounced me totally sane, but DONE with medical muff ups and missing my child LOL).

I hope they figure you out dear, but just like me, its best that you be there instead of a mess and possibly in danger at home. I know that sucks, but I also did 23 days at home unable to even walk down the hallway without passing out, and you DON'T want to have your babies see you like that!!!

I puked up blood for a day and a half about once an hour! It was a lot of puke and a lot of blood (sorry to be gross). My doctor said not to worry unless the blood was bright red. Mine was very dark. When I stopped the narcotics, the puking stopped. So no more pain killers for me...ever! Glad your in the hospital when they can monitor you closely. God is with you you'll be home soon back with your family. My prayers are with you!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
