Question For Post- Oppers

Recommended Posts

So why is it that your not susposed to drink 30min before or after eating? Or even as your eating? Does it " flush you out"? Or is it because of absorbing nutrients and filling up too fast??

Thanx Carrie

Both I believe. Oh there is a video that I think OTR sleever posted. I can't remember who posted it now... but it's a video that shows putting applesauce in a strainer on top of a bowl. That's the food in your belly. So imagine how the applesauce slowly glugs glugs out of the strainer into the bowl below. Your body needs that glug to indicate fullness and to absorb the nutrients. If you add Water to the strainer, then the applesauce and the Water rush through.... food "slides" through you more easily. At least that's the way my brain understood it. I'm sure someone will correct me on how wrong I am :( my apologies, it's just been that sort of day for me today ....

I'm going to try to find that video now....

Like 4A said it's both. You don't want to fill up with fluids before and you don't want force the food you ate thru to fast and like Joseph said it will cause you pain if you fill up your new stomach too much, or cause you to throw up.

Almost all of the absorption of nutrients takes place in the small intestines. The stomach is merely the device to break the food down to make absorption easier. But drinking too soon after meals will force food into the small intestines too soon, making absorption more difficult. Plus, you will not feel full as long. In a normal stomach this is not a problem, but the sleeve is much, much smaller than a normal stomach.

This is also why chewing is so important.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
