Is This Calculator Right?

Recommended Posts

I was trying to figure out my excess weight lost. My doctor said for VSG 60% of excess weight is considered a success. I am currently just under 3 months post op and have went from 209 to 163. According to the calculator (using 209 for start weight, my height of 5'4 and 60%) I have already met this..that can't be right?

Is it?

Thanks, but honestly it doesn't seem like this would be their goal for me. I would be mad if this is where I ended up in all honesty. I have a way to go! I hope I really knock it out of the park. I figured 135 was good for me, and used 140 as that would put me at 'normal Bmi'

60% is the minimum average that sleeved patients lose. They give you that goal to set you up for success. If you beat the average you are ahead of the curve. If you lose 90% or 100% of your excess weight, you're way ahead of the curve. But imagine if every surgeon set the goal at 100% excess weight loss. All the people who lose 80% would be considered failures. That's bad for your self esteem but also bad for business (from the doctors standpoint).

I was told between 40 and 60% is considered a success.. Anything over 60% is very good.. So far I'm only at 47% of my excess weight lost.. But I'm also 6 months pregnant. Can't wait to lose the rest after baby is born.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
